Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Estate

Midnight fell over the Moretti estate like a shroud of black velvet.

Inside the mansion, the celebratory atmosphere had wound down to a tranquil, intimate hush. In the grand dining room, Marta and the household staff—who had been personally informed by Damian that their wages were being doubled and that Elena was now the sovereign lady of the estate—had cleared away a private midnight dinner Damian and Elena had shared before the fireplace.

Elena stood in the master bedroom, dressed in a soft silk robe, standing before the antique vanity mirror.

She reached up with trembling fingers, unclasping a delicate, tarnished silver filigree cross from around her neck. She had worn it every day since her sixth birthday. Her mother had placed it around her neck on the day her father disappeared into the custody of federal marshals, telling her never, under any circumstances, to take it off.

*“Your father’s soul is inside this cross, Elena,”* her mother had whispered from her hospice bed years later. *“When the time comes, it will open the door to your true name.”*

Elena used her thumbnail to press against the hidden seam at the base of the cross.

With a faint, metallic click, the silver casing parted.

Inside the hollow core rested a microscopic platinum micro-drive, engraved with the initials *S.V.* and a twelve-digit cryptographic cipher.

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered and died.

Total darkness consumed the estate.

A split second later, the sharp, unmistakable stutter of suppressed automatic gunfire erupted from the perimeter gates.

Elena gasped, her heart leaping into her throat. She instantly clamped the silver cross shut and shoved it into the pocket of her robe.

The bedroom door was kicked open.

Elena flinched, preparing to defend herself, but it was Damian. He was armed with a black tactical assault rifle, wearing a kevlar vest over his dress shirt, his eyes blazing with ferocious intensity.

“Elena! With me, now!” Damian barked.

Elena rushed to his side. Damian grabbed her hand, pulling her into the corridor just as a hail of bullets shattered the bedroom windows behind them, tearing through the velvet drapes and shredding the plaster walls into clouds of white dust.

“Who is it?!” Elena shouted over the deafening roar of gunfire echoing from the lower floors.

“Bellini brought mercenaries from Detroit,” Damian said, moving with lethal, tactical efficiency down the rear service stairwell. “They cut the main power grid and blew through the south gate with an armored truck. Marcus and the perimeter team are holding the foyer, but they’re using thermal imaging and flashbangs. They came specifically for you.”

“For me? Why?!”

“Corrado knows about the physical cipher in your locket,” Damian revealed as they reached the reinforced basement corridor. “He can’t unlock the Swiss reserves without it!”

Before Elena could answer, a concussion grenade detonated at the top of the stairwell.

The shockwave threw them both against the reinforced concrete wall. Elena’s ears rang with a high-pitched whine, her vision blurring as smoke and blinding white sparks filled the narrow stairwell.

Through the haze, three heavily armed mercenaries clad in black tactical gear burst through the smoke.

Damian reacted instantaneously. He shoved Elena behind a steel blast door, raised his rifle, and fired three double-taps with pinpoint accuracy. The first two mercenaries collapsed instantly, their body armor failing against the high-velocity armor-piercing rounds.

But the third mercenary lunged forward, tackling Damian into the concrete wall. The rifle was knocked from Damian’s hands, skittering across the floor.

The mercenary drew a combat knife, bringing it down toward Damian’s throat. Damian caught the man’s wrist with both hands, his muscles straining as the razor-sharp steel hovered inches from his eyes.

Elena didn't hesitate.

She didn't scream. She didn't cower.

Catching sight of a heavy brass fire extinguisher mounted to the wall, Elena ripped it from its bracket with all the strength in her body. She swung it with a savage, desperate fury, smashing the solid metal cylinder directly into the side of the mercenary’s helmet.

The blow cracked the visor and shattered the man’s jaw. He grunted in agony, stumbling backward.

Damian seized the opening. He twisted the mercenary’s arm, snapping the wrist with a sickening crack, wrenched the combat knife free, and drove the blade cleanly through the gap beneath the man’s tactical vest.

The mercenary slumped lifelessly to the concrete floor.

Damian stood up, breathing heavily, blood smeared across his cheek. He looked at the fallen mercenary, then up at Elena, who was still holding the dented brass fire extinguisher, her chest heaving, her hazel eyes blazing like an avenging angel’s.

A wild, breathless laugh escaped Damian’s chest despite the gunfire raging above them.

“Remind me never to make you angry, Miss Vasquez,” he said, wiping the blood from his brow.

“Shut up and give me a gun,” Elena demanded.

Damian’s eyes darkened with fierce, intoxicating pride. He scooped up the fallen mercenary’s sidearm, checked the magazine, chambered a round, and placed it firmly into Elena’s hands.

“Stay behind me,” he said, cocking his own weapon. “Let’s go end the Bellini bloodline once and for all.”
