Chapter 10 - Retribution in Daylight

At ten o’clock that morning, the boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Steves Global building was filled with twelve executive directors, all of whom had spent the last three years treating me like background furniture.
They sat in their tailored suits, whispering anxiously about the rumors circulating from the Continental Hotel gala. None of them knew who had survived. None of them knew who held the power.
The double doors swung open.
I walked in first.
I wasn't wearing my old gray cardigans. I wore a bespoke ivory pantsuit tailored with razor-sharp shoulders, a silk camisole underneath, and four-inch Louboutin heels that struck the hardwood floor like thunderclaps. My hair was styled sleek, my makeup bold and commanding.
Behind me walked Larkin, wearing a three-piece charcoal suit, radiating raw, lethal authority.
The board members scrambled to their feet, bowing their heads in frantic deference.
"Sit down," Larkin commanded, taking his place at the head of the long conference table.
I didn't take my usual seat off to the side with the notepad and the recording device. Instead, I pulled out the high-backed leather chair to Larkin’s immediate right—the seat that had belonged to Thomas—and sat down, crossing my legs with supreme confidence.
The room went dead silent.
"As of six o'clock this morning," Larkin announced, leaning forward with his elbows on the table, "Thomas Steves has permanently resigned from his position as Chief Operating Officer. His shares have been liquidated and transferred to the executive reserve."
A nervous director raised his hand. "Mr. Steves... liquidated? Where is Thomas now?"
Larkin didn't answer. He simply looked at the man until the director broke eye contact and lowered his hand in terror.
"Moving forward," Larkin continued, his voice ringing with absolute finality, "all municipal logistics, offshore holdings, and security operations will be overseen by our new Chief Operating Officer and Managing Partner."
Larkin extended an open hand toward me.
"Miss Vance has full signatory authority across all domestic and international accounts. An order from her is an order from me. Disobeying her will carry the exact same consequences as crossing me directly."
He paused, a cold smirk touching his lips.
"Actually, that's not true. She’s much less forgiving than I am."
I leaned forward, resting my clasped hands on the mahogany surface, letting my gaze sweep over every terrified face in the room.
"Gentlemen," I said, my voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I’ve audited each of your departmental expense reports over the weekend. Five of you have thirty minutes to return unauthorized funds to corporate escrow before I forward your personal tax files to Don Rossi's enforcement committee."
Papers rustled violently as men began trembling, scrambling to pull out their phones under the table.

"Welcome to the new administration," I added with a chilling smile. "Let’s get to work."
