Chapter 8 - The Empire Crumbles

The broadcast switched to live aerial footage of Graham’s private estate outside the city. Six FBI tactical vehicles were parked across the manicured lawn. Agents in windbreakers were carrying out banker boxes, luxury art pieces, and filing cabinets.
*"In a stunning turn of events,"* the anchor announced, *"federal agents alongside state investigators have executed simultaneous raid warrants on the properties of industrial magnate Graham Sterling and his Chicago-based financial backer, Marcus Vance. Sterling, who was arrested yesterday afternoon following an altercation at his flagship distribution plant, now faces federal charges including racketeering, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony aggravated assault resulting in permanent bodily harm."*
The screen split to show Graham being led out of the county courthouse in an orange jumpsuit, his fractured arm secured in a sling, his head hung low as reporters shouted questions at him.
*"Mr. Sterling! Did you order the assault on Audrey Bellamy?"*
*"Is it true you stole sixteen million dollars from your own employees?"*
Graham tried to hide his face against his good shoulder, looking broken, pathetic, and stripped of every shred of the arrogant authority he had weaponized against his workers for years.
Then the camera shifted to a live press conference held by the State Attorney General.
*"Effective immediately,"* the Attorney General spoke into the microphones, *"all assets tied to Sterling Enterprises and Vance Capital have been seized under federal civil forfeiture laws. A court-supervised compensation fund of twenty million dollars has been established. Every employee who suffered wage theft, intimidation, or wrongful termination under Sterling's regime will receive full back pay with triple statutory damages. Furthermore, specialized medical restitution will be directly allocated to Ms. Audrey Bellamy, whose courage brought this entire syndicate into the light."*
I stared at the television screen, my heart pounding, tears spilling silently down my cheeks.
"Twenty million," I whispered. "Dad... the workers... Mrs. Higgins in packaging... she was going to lose her house next week."
"She won't lose it now," Dad said, placing a warm hand over mine. "None of them will. The bullies always think they can build an empire out of fear. But fear only works until someone hits them back hard enough to break their teeth."
Patrick leaned against the wall, a rare grin spreading across his leathery face. "Vance wire-transferred the full four million to the court trustee at 7:55 AM, Tom. Right on time. Looks like he decided he preferred breathing."

"Smart man," Dad murmured. "Doesn't mean the feds won't take the rest of his skin, but at least he saved his neck."
