Chapter 6 - The Breaking Point

The ballroom erupted into complete bedlam.

Cell phones were thrust into the air, cameras flashed blindingly, and dozens of Philadelphia's most prominent financiers pushed toward the exits in a desperate rush to distance themselves from the radioactive wreckage of Sullivan Capital.

Michael backed away toward the rear of the stage, his eyes wide and wild like a cornered animal.

"Get away from me!" he screamed at the approaching federal agents. "You don't have the jurisdiction! This is a civil dispute! Emily, you vindictive bitch, call them off!"

He turned suddenly, his eyes locking onto me with terrifying intensity.

Ignoring the agents, Michael lunged across the podium, knocking over the microphone with a deafening screech of feedback. His hands reached out toward my throat, his voice a manic shriek. "You destroyed me! You took everything I built!"

Before he could lay a finger on me, Judge Ellis stepped directly into his path, bracing his shoulder with surprising strength and throwing Michael off balance. In the next heartbeat, two FBI agents tackled Michael to the floor, driving their knees into his spine and pinning his arms behind his back with brutal efficiency.

The cold steel of the handcuffs locked around his wrists.

"Watch your head, Mr. Sullivan," Agent Vance muttered coldly, hauling Michael to his feet by the collar of his ruined thousand-dollar tuxedo.

Michael struggled violently, his polished hair falling wildly over his face, spittle flying from his lips as he glared at me from across the dais. "You won't get a dime, Emily! I hid it all! It's gone! You'll raise that child in the gutter where you belong!"

"Actually, Mr. Sullivan," Sarah Sterling remarked smoothly, holding up her smartphone where a notification was flashing green. "The federal receiver, working with the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, has already placed a worldwide freezing order on the Zurich accounts. The legitimate portions of your personal estate—including the Society Hill townhouse and your private investment holdings—have been designated as secured marital assets for Emily and your child under emergency equitable distribution."

Michael went limp in the agents' grip. The realization hit him like a physical blow: he wasn't just ruined; he was completely stripped of every ounce of wealth, status, and influence he had worshiped his entire life.

As the agents dragged him past the shattered champagne flutes toward the service elevator, I stood completely still on the stage, watching the man I had once thought was my protector disappear into the custody of the United States government.

A sudden, sharp pain flared across the lower half of my abdomen.

I gasped, my hands instinctively gripping the edge of the podium. The room spun for a brief second as a tight, crushing cramp seized my entire midsection, stealing the breath from my lungs.

"Emily?" Judge Ellis asked, turning immediately to my side and catching my elbow. "What's wrong?"

"Sarah..." I whispered through gritted teeth, bending forward as another wave of pressure hit me like a tidal wave. "My water... it just broke."

Sarah dropped her legal binder onto a chair and rushed forward, her calm legal demeanor instantly replaced by urgent maternal panic. "Someone call an ambulance! Now!"

"The baby..." I choked out, beads of cold sweat gathering on my forehead as the contractions began with terrifying intensity, coming less than two minutes apart. "It's too early... she's not due for another four weeks!"

"Stay calm, Emily," Judge Ellis said, his voice deep, steady, and commanding. He guided me gently to a plush banquet chair while Sarah barked orders at the building staff to clear the private freight entrance for the emergency medical team. "Look at me. Focus on my voice. You fought for her. You won. Now you just need to bring her into the world."

The distant wail of sirens echoed from the street below, cutting through the cold autumn night, racing toward the Wanamaker Building.

I leaned back, closing my eyes, wrapping my arms tightly around my belly as the pains grew fiercer, knowing that the battle against Michael was over—but the fight to bring my daughter safely into the light was just beginning.
