Chapter 9 - The Client Ledger

Inside the lockbox sat three external solid-state hard drives, a ledger bound in black leather, and a stack of printed dossiers labeled with names that made my breath hitch.
I pulled out the first dossier. The name on the cover was *Senator William Vance*.
Detective Vance had just finished securing Marcus against the wall in the dining room and stepped into the library, radioing for an ambulance for Elisa.
"Detective," I called out, my voice sounding hollow and distant even to my own ears. "You need to see this."
Vance walked over, wiping soot from her brow. I handed her the dossier.
As she read the cover page, the color drained from her face entirely. Her hands began to shake. "This... this is my uncle. The chairman of the state judiciary committee."
"Read the dates," Marcus called out from the other room, his voice full of venomous amusement. "Read the transcripts, Detective! Your beloved uncle didn't just know about my behavioral conditioning research; he funded it! Where do you think I got the proprietary biometric monitoring components? St. Jude’s pediatric neuro-developmental division! Your uncle signed the grant authorizations three years ago!"
The pieces began falling into place with terrifying speed.
This wasn't an isolated case of a psychotic father abusing his daughter in secret. Marcus was developing an automated, biometric behavioral compliance system. The dining table in his home was a test bed, an unmonitored proving ground where he could refine the hardware and software on the most defenseless subjects imaginable—his own wife and daughter.
And the people backing him weren't back-alley criminals. They were judges, senators, and institutional directors who wanted an undetectable, legally deniable tool for domestic and institutional control.
"He... he has the recordings," Elisa whispered, clutching my arm as she struggled to sit up. "Every dinner. Every meeting. He invited politicians here, Michael. He seated them at the table. He used the sensors in the chairs to measure their stress responses during negotiations, to blackmail them, to find their breaking points. Sophia was just... she was his baseline."
A baseline. A five-year-old child used as a control group for a cybernetic torture apparatus.
Detective Vance stared at the dossier in her hands, her world visibly fracturing around her. "My uncle... he appointed the night judge who is currently reviewing Marcus’s emergency petition."

Right on cue, Detective Vance’s radio squawked.
*Unit 42, priority transmission from Chief of Police. All operations at 442 Crestview Manor are to cease immediately. Judge Callahan has signed a federal injunction vacating the CPS protective custody hold on Sophia Vance. St. Jude’s hospital has been ordered to release the minor to the care of Marcus Vance’s designated legal guardians.*
