Chapter 4 - The Ambush

The headquarters of Sterling & Croft Commercial Real Estate occupied a historic brownstone just off Rittenhouse Square. Its brass fixtures gleamed in the late morning sun, projecting an image of old-money stability, discretion, and impeccability. It was an image Jonah had spent his entire career curating.

When Hannah and I stepped through the revolving glass doors, the silence in the grand lobby was deafening.

The receptionist—a young woman named Chloe who had always politely checked me in whenever I brought Jonah his forgotten lunch—looked up from her computer monitor. The moment her eyes met mine, her face turned pale. Her gaze drifted down to the faint purple discoloration along my jawline and the simple clothes I was wearing.

"Mrs. Vance," Chloe stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "I... I mean, Lauren. Hello."

"Is Jonah at his desk?" Hannah asked, stepping forward with her briefcase held firmly at her side.

"Mr. Vance is currently in the corner conference room with Mr. Sterling," Chloe said nervously, her eyes darting toward the heavy frosted-glass doors down the wood-paneled hallway. "They’ve been in there behind closed doors since eight-thirty this morning. The phones haven't stopped ringing. Clients have been calling, asking about the... about the social media posts."

Before Chloe could pick up her desk phone to alert them, the frosted glass door swung open with a violent click.

Jonah stepped out into the corridor, looking completely unraveled. His signature silk tie was undone at the collar, his hair was disheveled, and the sharp, arrogant confidence he usually wore like a second skin was entirely missing. Behind him stood Arthur Sterling, a silver-haired titan of Philadelphia commerce whose family had done business in the city for three generations. Sterling's face was flushed crimson with absolute fury.

"I don't give a damn about your mother’s blood pressure, Jonah!" Sterling’s voice boomed down the hallway, echoing off the high ceilings. "Two of our major institutional investors have already pulled their listings this morning! They don't want their brand associated with a spineless coward who watches a woman get beaten with holiday poultry!"

"Arthur, please, let me explain, it was an isolated domestic—" Jonah pleaded, turning around frantically—until his eyes collided with mine.

He froze.

For a split second, a flicker of profound relief crossed his face, instantly replaced by dark, defensive anger. He marched down the hallway toward us, his polished oxford shoes slapping aggressively against the marble floor.

"Lauren!" he hissed under his breath, glancing around nervously as several junior brokers poked their heads out of cubicles. "What are you doing here? Are you completely insane? Have you seen the news? Have you seen what Megan did to our family?"

I stood my ground, my spine straighter than it had ever been in his presence. "What Megan did? Megan saved my life while you cheered your mother on."

"She ruined my career!" Jonah snarled, stepping into my personal space, raising a hand in an accusatory gesture. "Mom is at home in bed, having severe heart palpitations! The doctor had to be called! And you—you let Megan post that clipped, deceptive video online without context! You know how Mom gets when her blood sugar drops! You provoked her by touching Megan’s display!"

"Jonah Vance," Hannah’s voice cut through the air like a butcher's knife through frozen meat.

Jonah turned, noticing Hannah for the first time. The color completely drained from his lips. "Hannah? What... what are you doing with her?"

"I am Mrs. Vance’s legal counsel," Hannah announced clearly, loud enough for every single person in the reception area—and Arthur Sterling, who was now watching with crossed arms—to hear every syllable. "And I am here to formally serve you notice that an emergency petition for a Protection From Abuse order has been filed with the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Furthermore, this document serves as a formal demand for the immediate return of the $48,500 you unlawfully siphoned from the marital joint account at 5:15 this morning."

Jonah stared at the thick white envelope Hannah shoved against his chest. His fingers twitched, but he didn't take it. It fell to the polished floor, landing between his feet.

"You emptied our account?" Jonah choked out, trying to reverse the narrative. "That is family money! My mother gifted us the seed capital for that account!"

"Every dollar of seed capital Eleanor provided was spent two years ago on the renovation of *her* carriage house to increase *her* property value," I said, looking directly into the eyes of the man I had loved, realizing with sudden, crystalline clarity that I was looking at an absolute stranger. "The money you stole this morning was earned by me. And you have twenty-four hours to return it before Hannah files criminal conversion charges with the District Attorney."

"Lauren, stop this!" Jonah grabbed my arm, his grip tightening above my wrist. "You're my wife! We settle this at home, like a family! You come back to the house right now and apologize to my mother, and we’ll figure out how to put out this fire together!"

"Take your hands off her, Vance."

The command didn't come from me, and it didn't come from Hannah.

It came from Arthur Sterling.

The older man walked slowly down the corridor, his gaze fixed on Jonah’s hand gripping my sleeve. Jonah immediately released me as if he had been burned by an open flame.

"Pack your desk, Jonah," Sterling said quietly, his voice deadly calm. "Clear out your office by noon. Security will escort you from the premises."

"Arthur, wait! You can’t fire me over a personal misunderstanding!" Jonah cried, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. "I’ve brought in fifteen million in leases this year!"

"Sterling & Croft does not employ men who assault women, nor do we employ men who stand by while their mothers do it," Sterling replied coldly. Then, turning his gaze toward me, his expression softened with genuine sorrow. "Mrs. Vance, if you need security personnel to accompany you to retrieve your personal belongings from the carriage house, my private security detail is at your disposal."

May you like

Jonah sank against the reception counter, looking completely destroyed. But as I turned my back on him to walk out into the November daylight, I knew Eleanor Vance would not surrender so easily.
