Chapter 9 - The Confession Under Oath

By two o'clock that afternoon, the conference room of the United States Attorney’s Office in lower Manhattan had become a battleground.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Hall sat across from Ximena Fairchild and her court-appointed public defender. The high-priced private defense attorneys she had tried to contact that morning had all declined representation the moment they learned that her accounts had been frozen by federal order.

"Let's go over the wire transfer one more time, Ms. Fairchild," Hall said, tapping a pen against a thick stack of bank printouts. "On October 14th, at 3:15 PM, you received an urgent requisition from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for fifty-two thousand dollars to release a specialized respiratory filtration system for Chloe Fairchild. Do you recall that message?"

Ximena sat slumped in her metal chair, her eyes swollen shut, her face blotchy and gray. "I... I receive hundreds of emails a day. I don't read every single one."

"You read this one," Hall replied, sliding an email printout across the table. "Because at 3:22 PM—seven minutes later—you forwarded that exact requisition to Samantha Cole with the message: *'She's trying to tap the emergency line again. Tell Brendan to keep his phone off so she can't reach him.'*"

Ximena’s lawyer quickly reached out, pressing his hand against the paper. "My client was acting under the broad instruction of the CEO to cut operational overhead during an active internal audit."

"Operational overhead?" Hall leaned forward, his eyes burning with disgust. "We just searched Ms. Cole's luxury boutique in Soho. We found seventy-four thousand dollars in designer inventory purchased with corporate debit cards issued under Chloe Fairchild’s medical trust. That's not overhead, counselor. That is depraved-heart second-degree murder and interstate wire fraud."

Ximena began to shake uncontrollably. "It wasn't my idea! It was Brendan! Brendan said Nora was using the child to keep him locked in the marriage! He wanted Nora to feel desperate so she would agree to sign a post-nuptial agreement giving up her trust rights! He told me if we squeezed her for two weeks, she would sign anything just to get Chloe's medical bills paid!"

Behind the one-way observation mirror, I stood with Raymond, watching the sister destroy her brother with every single breath she took.

"Did you hear that, Raymond?" I whispered.

"Every word is being recorded on digital audio and court transcript," Raymond answered quietly. "The federal prosecutors already have enough for an immediate indictment without bail. They are executing the arrest warrant for Brendan right now."

Through the glass, I watched Ximena bury her face in her arms on the metal table, wailing as the federal marshals entered the room with handcuffs. She had spent her entire life stepping on the necks of others, cloaked in the untouchable armor of the Fairchild name. Now, that armor had dissolved into a steel cage.

"And what about Samantha?" I asked.

"She was arrested forty minutes ago at JFK Airport," Raymond replied, checking his phone. "She had two suitcases filled with unregistered luxury watches and forty thousand dollars in cash. She was attempting to board a flight to Dubai. She is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center."

I closed my eyes for a long moment, listening to the hum of the air conditioning, feeling the strange, hollow emptiness that always follows the storm.

The monsters who had killed my daughter were being dragged into the dark. But the nursery at the estate was still empty. The white crib was still cold.

"Raymond," I said, turning away from the glass.

"Yes, Mrs. Harrison?"

"Sell the Fairchild estate. Liquidate every single piece of furniture, every painting, every chandelier. I don't want a single brick bearing that name left standing."

"And the proceeds?"

"Establish the Chloe Harrison Memorial Foundation," I said, my voice hardening with pure resolve. "Every child whose parents are denied medical coverage by corporate greed will have their bills paid in full before sunset. Let Brendan's legacy be the salvation of every child he would have allowed to die."
