Chapter 8 - Alejandro’s True Colors

The fallout from the New Year’s Gala was swift, brutal, and absolute.
Within twenty-four hours, the public relations catastrophe destroyed whatever remaining credibility Patricia and Alejandro had possessed. Every major charity board severed ties with Patricia. High-society clubs canceled her memberships. Sofia’s wealthy fiancé broke off their engagement via text message, citing the grotesque viral video as proof of moral degeneracy.
But for Alejandro, the nightmare had only just begun.
On the second of January, while Patricia and Sofia were barricaded inside their rented apartment hiding from paparazzi, Alejandro sat in an interrogation room at the headquarters of Vance Global Logistics.
Across the metal table sat Montgomery, two forensic accountants from an independent auditing firm, and myself.
Alejandro looked like a ghost of the man I had married. His suit was wrinkled, his stubble thick, and the arrogance that once defined his posture had been reduced to a nervous, manic twitching.
"Elena, please," Alejandro begged, ignoring the attorneys entirely. "Why are you doing this? The video was enough. You humiliated us in front of the entire city. My mother won't leave her bedroom. Sofia is suicidal. Haven't you had your revenge?"
"This isn't revenge, Alejandro," I said, setting a thick audit dossier between us. "This is a criminal audit."
Alejandro’s eyes darted to the file. He swallowed hard.
"What is that?"
"Over the past forty-eight hours, our forensic team audited your personal expense accounts and the construction procurement division you managed for the past four years," Montgomery stated, opening the folder to reveal dozens of flagged invoices. "Over seven point eight million dollars were diverted from corporate building accounts into private shell companies registered in Delaware and the Cayman Islands under your personal initials."
Alejandro’s breath hitched. "Those... those were legitimate subcontractor fees! Development costs!"
"They were phantom companies, Alejandro," I said, looking at him with profound sorrow. "You were stealing from your own father’s company. You were funneling millions out of the business while lecturing me about frugality. You told me we couldn't afford to hire an extra nurse for Don Ricardo after his stroke, while you were wiring hundreds of thousands of dollars to private luxury accounts."
"I was planning for our future!" Alejandro shouted, slamming his fists onto the table. "My father was never going to hand over the company to me! He always treated me like a boy! I needed to build my own leverage! I did it for us, Elena!"
"Don't you dare use my name to justify your thievery," I snapped, my voice freezing the air in the room. "You didn't do it for us. Look at page fourteen."
Montgomery flipped the page.
Spread across the paper were photographs and bank receipts documenting luxury penthouse rentals, diamond watches, and luxury vacations to St. Barts. None of them featured me.
They featured Chloe Davenport, a junior interior designer Alejandro had hired two years ago.
The room fell dead silent.
Alejandro slumped back into his metal chair, all the fight draining out of him. His eyes stared blankly at the photographs of him boarding private yachts with another woman while I was at home cooking dinners and nursing his ailing father.
"Five years," I whispered, feeling the last remaining vestige of grief turn into diamond-hard resolve. "You cheated on me, you stole from your father, you stood by while your mother beat me, and you dared to tell me to be grateful."
"Elena..." Alejandro choked, tears running down his stubbled cheeks. "I was weak. I was stupid. Chloe meant nothing to me! She was just a distraction from the pressure! You are the only woman I ever loved! Please... don't send me to prison. Dad will listen to you! If you press charges, I’ll get twenty years! I will die in there!"
He lunged across the table, trying to grab my hands, but Montgomery instantly pushed his chair back, and two company security guards stepped in, pinning Alejandro against the wall.
"The evidence has already been forwarded to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District," Montgomery stated calmly. "Grand jury indictments for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion are scheduled for tomorrow afternoon."
"Elena! Look at me!" Alejandro screamed, thrashing against the guards’ grip. "I am your husband! We took an oath before God! You can't destroy me like this! You’re supposed to be a good person! You’re supposed to forgive!"
I stood up, smoothing the front of my blazer. I looked at the man who had terrorized my spirit, gaslit my mind, and broken my body, and I felt nothing. No anger. No hatred. Only the clean, quiet liberation of a woman who had finally walked out of the dark.
"I am a good person, Alejandro," I said softly, looking him directly in the eyes. "That's why I'm letting justice handle you, instead of doing what your mother did to me."
I turned toward the door.
May you like
"Goodbye, Alejandro."
