Chapter 8 - Turning the Tables

At 9:30 AM the following morning, Courtroom 402 of the New York County Supreme Court was freezing cold.
Travis sat at the petitioner’s table, flanked by Victor and three senior partners from one of the most expensive corporate litigation firms in the country. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, a silver tie, and an expression of serene, untouchable arrogance.
When the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom opened, Travis didn't even bother to look back. He assumed Marcus Vance would walk in alone, clutching a desperate plea for a continuance.
Instead, the sharp, rhythmic click of designer heels against marble echoed through the room.
Travis turned. His jaw went rigid.
I walked down the center aisle wearing an ivory tailored silk suit, my hair styled in clean, sharp waves, carrying a vintage leather briefcase that had belonged to my father. Behind me walked Marcus Vance, carrying three pristine leather-bound binders. Behind Marcus walked Evelyn Vance-Shaw, the independent forensic auditor from the day before, her face stern and unyielding.
And behind Evelyn walked two federal marshals in plain clothes, their badges pinned discreetly to their lapels.
Travis slowly rose from his chair. "What is the meaning of this?"
Victor leaned over, his face suddenly drained of color. "Travis... look at Evelyn."
Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench, took his seat and banged his gavel with authority. "This is a preliminary hearing for the marital asset valuation in *Fenwick v. Fenwick*. Counsel, please state your appearances."
Travis’s lead attorney stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor, before we address the valuation, we have an emergency petition. Early this morning, Northgate Holdings detected an unauthorized wire transfer of $3.4 million from corporate reserves. We have preliminary digital evidence suggesting the respondent, Eliza Fenwick, utilized unauthorized access credentials to execute this embezzlement."
"Is that so?" Judge Harrison raised an eyebrow, looking down at Marcus. "Mr. Vance, does your client have a response to this extraordinarily grave allegation?"
Marcus stood up, buttoning his jacket with absolute composure.
"We do, Your Honor," Marcus said smoothly. "In fact, we welcome the court's immediate scrutiny of that very transaction. We have here a certified evidentiary submission, verified by Mrs. Evelyn Vance-Shaw, who was retained as an independent forensic auditor by Northgate’s own board of directors."
Marcus handed three thick dossiers to the bailiff, who delivered one to the judge and one to Travis’s legal team.
Travis snatched the folder from his lawyer's hands, his eyes tearing through the pages.
"This is impossible," Travis muttered, his voice cracking slightly. "This is forged."
"What you are looking at, Your Honor," Marcus declared, his voice ringing with absolute clarity across the vaulted ceiling of the courtroom, "is the Federal Reserve’s raw cryptographic transmission log for the $3.4 million transfer completed at 12:00:00 last night. The authorization did not originate from a janitorial network badge. It was authorized by Hardware Token TF-001—the master cryptographic key physically registered to, and held by, Travis Fenwick himself."
"That's a lie!" Victor blurted out, jumping to his feet. "The terminal on forty was breached!"
"Furthermore," Marcus continued relentlessly, ignoring the outburst, "the receiving entity, Fenwick Legacy Assets LLC, was established using personal funds routed through an offshore account controlled exclusively by Victor Cruz and Travis Fenwick. We have attached the banking records, obtained under emergency subpoena this morning, demonstrating that this was an intentional scheme to artificially depress Northgate's cash valuation prior to today's hearing."
Judge Harrison’s eyes darkened as he turned the pages. "Mr. Fenwick, is this your cryptographic signature on this federal wire authorization?"
Travis stood frozen. The color had fled his face entirely, leaving his skin an ashen, sickly gray. His hands trembled as he gripped the polished oak table.
"Your Honor," Travis stammered, his polished veneer cracking like brittle glass. "There has been... an administrative misunderstanding. The funds were being moved for corporate restructuring—"
"Restructuring?" Evelyn Vance-Shaw spoke up from the gallery, her sharp voice slicing through his defense like a scalpel. "Mr. Fenwick, your board of directors was never informed of this transfer. As of seven o'clock this morning, the board convened an emergency session. In light of the evidence of systematic asset stripping and fraudulent concealment, they have unanimously voted to suspend your executive powers effective immediately."
Travis turned toward Victor, his eyes wild with terror. "Victor! Tell them!"
May you like
Victor slowly took a step away from Travis, his hands raised in surrender, refusing to meet his boss's gaze.
