Chapter 7 - The Grand Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the St. Regis was bathed in opulent gold and midnight blue. Over five hundred of the state’s elite—politicians, hedge fund titans, tech founders, and foreign dignitaries—mingled under towering crystal chandeliers, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon and whispering behind delicate silk fans.
The air was electric with rumors. Everyone had heard fragments of the scandal: Julian Vance’s sudden disappearance from high society, Victoria’s humiliation at the country club, and the mysterious corporate maneuvers that had sent Vance Holdings' stock into a tailspin on Friday afternoon.
At the center of the room, Victoria Vance stood beside Arthur, both of them looking ten years older than they had four days ago. Victoria’s smile was brittle, painted on like a cracked mask, while Arthur nervously checked his pocket watch every thirty seconds. They were desperately trying to maintain the illusion of control, assuring investors that Julian was simply "taking a brief personal leave."
And then, the heavy brass doors of the ballroom swung wide.
A hush rippled through the crowd, spreading from the entrance all the way to the stage.
I walked in.
I wore a floor-length, backless gown of liquid emerald silk—the exact same shade Clara had worn to my dining table on Thursday, but tailored with an elegance and command that made Clara look like an amateur playing dress-up. Around my neck was a stunning platinum choker set with raw, unheated sapphires.
Beside me walked Marcus Cole, looking razor-sharp in a bespoke tuxedo, alongside two senior representatives from the state's commercial banking consortium.
"Look at her," someone whispered nearby.
"Is that Elena? She looks... unbelievable."
"I heard she took over the entire mezzanine debt portfolio..."
I ignored the whispers, walking with steady, measured grace straight through the parted sea of guests toward the stage. I didn't glance at Victoria, nor did I acknowledge Arthur’s terrified, pleading stare as I passed their table.
At 8:30 PM, the master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests," the MC announced, his voice reverberating through the vast hall. "Tonight, as we celebrate our annual philanthropy initiatives, we also have a historic announcement regarding the future leadership and corporate restructuring of our primary corporate benefactor, Vance Holdings. Please welcome to the stage... Ms. Elena Vance."
Polite, curious applause echoed through the room as I mounted the three carpeted steps to the podium.
The stage lights warmed my face. I looked out over the sea of five hundred influential faces. In the third row, Victoria was clutching Arthur’s arm so hard her knuckles were white.
"Thank you, everyone," I began, my voice calm, melodic, and perfectly amplified. "For half a century, the Vance name has been synonymous with stability, legacy, and community investment in this city. But true legacy cannot be built on an unstable foundation. And true leadership requires transparency, even when the truth is uncomfortable."
Suddenly, the side doors of the ballroom banged open with a loud, violent crash.
"Elena!"
A chorus of gasps erupted as Julian Vance stumbled into the ballroom.
He was wearing a rumpled tuxedo, his bowtie undone, his eyes bloodshot and wild. Two private security guards rushed to intercept him, but Julian shoved one of them into a champagne tower, sending dozens of flutes crashing to the polished parquet floor with a deafening cacophony of breaking crystal.
"Julian! No!" Victoria shrieked from her table, rising in pure horror.
"Let him come," I commanded into the microphone, my voice cutting through the panic like an iron bell.
The security guards paused, looking up at me. I gave them a subtle nod. They stepped back, flanking the aisle, forming a tight perimeter around Julian as he marched toward the stage like a madman.
Julian reached the base of the stage, glaring up at me with raw, venomous hatred. "You think you won, don't you?!" he screamed, his voice carrying to every corner of the frozen room. "You think you can steal my company, steal my family's legacy, and humiliate me in front of everyone I know?!"
The room was deathly silent. Not a single person breathed.
"I didn't steal anything, Julian," I replied from behind the podium, looking down at him with an expression of calm pity. "You gambled with money that wasn't yours, and you lost."
"She's a fraud!" Julian yelled, turning to face the shocked audience, waving his arms wildly. "Listen to me! All of you! She hacked our accounts! She forged corporate authorizations! She fabricated an affair to justify an illegal hostile takeover! Clara Dupont was a legitimate financial consultant brought in to broker a Swiss technology merger!"
Right on cue, another commotion broke out at the rear entrance.
Two uniformed officers from the city police department entered, escorting a woman in handcuffs.
It was Clara Dupont.
She was still wearing the traveling coat she had tried to flee in, her hair messy, her face streaked with tears and mascara. Behind her walked two special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, wearing dark suits and windbreakers bearing yellow lettering.
Clara looked up, saw Julian on the stage, and let out a furious, hysterical scream. "Julian, you idiot! You led them right to my private hanger! They arrested me at the airfield!"
Julian’s jaw dropped. He whipped around, staring at the federal agents in sheer, paralyzing horror.
"Clara Dupont," Agent Harris, the lead FBI investigator, announced, stepping into the center aisle and holding up an official badge and warrant. "And Julian Vance. Pursuant to an indictment handed down by the federal grand jury at 4:00 PM today, you are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate espionage."
"No... no, wait!" Julian stammered, backing away from the stage steps, his hands raised in surrender. "There’s a mistake! My father—Arthur Vance—he authorized the transfers! Ask him!"
Julian pointed an accusing finger straight at Arthur’s table.
Every eye in the room turned to Arthur Vance.
The old man stood up slowly, his shoulders slumped, his eyes vacant. He looked at his son—the golden boy he had spoiled, protected, and elevated above all others—and shook his head in silent, absolute disgust.
"I authorized nothing, Julian," Arthur whispered, his voice broken, barely carrying across the front tables. "You forged my digital token. You tried to sell this family out from under us."
"Dad! No! You promised me!" Julian screamed, his voice breaking into a pathetic, high-pitched sob as two federal agents stepped behind him, grabbing his arms and forcing them behind his back.
