Chapter 9 - The Vance Gala

That evening, the grand ballroom of the Grand Plaza Hotel was illuminated with crystal chandeliers and filled with the elite of high society. Eleanor Vance was hosting her annual Autumn Benefit Gala, surrounded by senators, judges, and corporate titans, completely unaware of what had unfolded in the alley hours before.
Julian was absent, nursing his broken jaw in private, but Eleanor was in full glory, holding a champagne flute as she addressed the assembled crowd of hundreds from the raised mahogany podium.
"The Vance Foundation has always stood for integrity, service, and legacy," Eleanor announced smoothly, her voice amplified across the majestic ballroom. "Even in our darkest hours, we remain committed to truth."
"Then let's talk about the truth, Mother," a deep, commanding voice boomed through the speakers.
The ballroom fell into dead silence. Every head turned toward the main entrance.
Jonah walked down the red carpet, dressed in an immaculate black tuxedo, holding my hand firmly. I wore a midnight-blue evening gown, my head held high, walking with the confidence of a woman who held the match to incinerate every lie in the room. Behind us, walking beside an imposing man in an FBI windbreaker, was the Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District.
Eleanor's face drained of every ounce of color. The champagne flute slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished parquet floor.
"Jonah..." Eleanor whispered into the live microphone, her voice trembling for the first time in her life. "What is this theatrics?"
May you like
"It’s not theatrics, Eleanor," I spoke loudly, stepping up toward the stage while Jonah handed the USB drive and our father’s journals to the federal agents. "It’s an unsealed indictment for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Gasps erupted across the room as two dozen federal agents filed through the ballroom doors, surrounding the stage.
