Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT OUR DAUGHTER DISAPPEARED

We collected Sophie from school immediately.

She was frightened when she saw Daniel waiting beside the office, but he hugged her and assured her that she had done nothing wrong.

The police arranged additional protection while investigating the photograph.

For the first time, I understood that Richard wasn't simply trying to escape punishment.

He was trying to regain control.

That evening, we moved Sophie to Evelyn's house under police supervision. Rachel joined us, and Detective Ruiz arranged for officers to remain nearby.

Daniel refused to leave our daughter.

I returned to the hospital to check on Margaret.

Her condition had begun to improve under the medical team's care, although her doctors warned that recovery would take time. The investigation into the powder was ongoing, and nobody yet knew how much damage had been done.

When I entered her room, Margaret was watching the doorway.

"Claire," she whispered.

I took her hand.

"I'm here."

She moved her eyes toward the bedside drawer.

Inside was a small photograph of Michael as a child.

Behind it, we found a folded piece of paper.

Margaret had written the message herself, slowly and painfully.

Richard has another key.

I called Detective Ruiz.

The detective asked Margaret to clarify.

With the letter board, she explained that Richard had access to a second safe deposit box that did not appear in the family's financial records.

She remembered seeing him use a brass key before Michael disappeared.

A second key.

A second box.

Possibly more evidence.

Investigators searched Richard's home under the appropriate legal authority and found the key hidden inside a locked desk drawer.

The box contained cash, documents, and a handwritten list of names.

Some belonged to former business associates.

Others belonged to people who had died under circumstances that had never been fully investigated.

The list included Michael's name.

Beside it was a date.

The date of the boating accident.

But there was something else.

A receipt showed that Richard had rented a private cabin near the marina on the night Michael disappeared.

The cabin had been registered under a false name.

Detective Ruiz requested additional records and began coordinating with investigators who had jurisdiction over the original case.

Meanwhile, Richard vanished.

His phone was switched off. His vehicle was missing. His attorney claimed not to know where he had gone.

Then, shortly after midnight, Evelyn called me.

Her voice trembled.

"Claire, someone is outside."

I woke Daniel.

He contacted Detective Ruiz while I listened to the phone.

Evelyn described a dark vehicle parked across the street. A man had approached the front door, then walked away when she turned on the porch light.

Officers arrived within minutes.

They found fresh tire tracks and a broken gate latch.

Nobody had entered the house.

But when Daniel checked on Sophie, her bedroom was empty.

For several seconds, the world stopped.

Then we heard a sound from the basement.

A small, frightened voice.

"Daddy?"

Daniel raced downstairs.

Sophie was hiding behind a storage cabinet, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

She had awakened after hearing someone trying the back door. She had hidden instinctively, just as we had taught her during our safety drills.

Daniel gathered her into his arms.

I sank to the floor beside them, shaking with relief.

Outside, officers found a discarded glove near the gate and a partial footprint in the damp soil.

It wasn't enough to identify anyone.

But it was enough to establish that the threat against our family was real.

Detective Ruiz increased the protection around us.

Then her phone rang.

She listened without speaking.

When she finally looked up, her expression was grave.

A witness had contacted investigators.

The witness claimed to know what happened to Michael Bennett twelve years earlier.

And he was willing to testify.

But there was one condition.

He wanted protection from Richard.

May you like

Because he had not merely witnessed the boating accident.

He had helped cover it up.
