Chapter 4 - The Blood Brother

The betrayal sliced through me deeper than any knife could have.

Julian had spent Thanksgiving at our table. He had carved the turkey. He had helped Rosie assemble her Lego castle on the living room floor. And when the search parties were scouring the woods along the reservoir, Julian had led the volunteer team, shouting Rosie's name until his voice was entirely gone.

He wasn't searching for her. He was monitoring the perimeter.

I stared at the phone as the audio continued.

Julian’s voice, tense and strained, came through the speaker: *"Shut up, Rosie! Just sit down and put your head between your knees! Caleb, she saw me. She pulled the ski mask off when I reached into the back seat! I told you we should have drugged her juice!"*

Then came Caleb's voice—not panicked, but cold, calculating, and impatient: *"Just tie her hands with the zip ties. Take her to the salt shed off Pier 9. Vance’s crew is waiting there. Julian, we’re forty-eight hours away from clearing twelve million dollars. Stop being a coward."*

*"She knows, Caleb! She knows it's me! What happens on Monday when they let her go? She'll tell Audrey!"*

*"I'll handle Audrey,"* Caleb had replied. *"Audrey believes whatever I tell her. Just get the girl to Kane."*

The recording cut off with the sound of Rosie crying out for me: *"Mommy! Please, Mommy, tell Daddy to stop!"*

A violent heave racked my stomach. I fell to my knees on the wet concrete of the pavilion, dry-heaving until my ribs ached.

It hadn't been an accident. It hadn't been a botched handoff by third-party thugs.

My husband and his brother had orchestrated the entire nightmare. And when Rosie realized what was happening, Julian had panicked.

I stood up slowly, wiping rain and bile from my mouth. The grief that had paralyzed me for forty-eight hours suddenly crystallized. The weeping, shattered mother died in that rain-soaked churchyard.

In her place stood someone who had nothing left to lose.

I looked at Caleb’s phone. A new message popped up on the screen. It was from Julian, sent to Caleb thirty seconds ago:

*Kane’s men just called. They said Audrey ran. Where the hell is she, Caleb? Did she find the ledger? If she talks to Detective Miller before we get the wire out, we're both doing life in Supermax.*

I gripped the phone tightly, my thumb flying across the keyboard.

Impersonating Caleb, I typed:

*She doesn't know anything yet. She’s terrified and hiding at the old boathouse on Candlewood Lake. I’m pinned down at the house. Go there now and secure her before she calls the police.*

Three dots appeared instantly.

Julian replied: *On my way. Don't let Kane leave without my cut.*
