Chapter 9 - Dismantling the Dynasty

Over the next four weeks, I executed the systematic dismantling of the Montgomery family legacy with the clinical precision of a surgeon removing a tumor.

The firm, Montgomery Design Partners, was forced into Chapter 11 reorganization due to Grant’s embezzlement. As the primary creditor holding the corporate debt, I bought the entire company at auction for pennies on the dollar, stripped the Montgomery name from the brass plaque outside the Uptown Charlotte headquarters, and rebranded it under my own maiden name: *Vanguard Spatial Dynamics*.

Clients who had been loyal to Grant’s father called me in droves, expressing their outrage at his betrayal and pledging their continued business to me. They didn't care about the family name; they cared about the woman who had actually managed the project margins and delivered their skyscrapers on time for the last decade.

Judith’s country club membership was revoked following an emergency board meeting. Her historical society chair was scrubbed from their website. The luxury townhome I had purchased for her in Myers Park was placed on the market, its high-end mid-century furniture liquidated at estate sales to repay the debts Grant had racked up under her name.

And then there was Tessa Langford.

The district attorney in Helen, Georgia, officially reopened the cold case into Mark Mercer’s fatal rollover accident after our forensic team provided the digital recordings and financial links between Tessa and the corrupt coroner. Facing two counts of premeditated capital murder in two different states, Tessa took an emergency plea deal.

In exchange for avoiding the death penalty, she laid out the entire conspiracy in grueling, handwritten detail across eighty-two pages of sworn depositions.

She named Judith as the executor of the mechanical tampering.

She named Grant as the architect of the financial fraud and the decoy planner.

And she confirmed that the original target had been me—scheduled to die on the steep curves of Route 9 during my weekly Friday morning drive to the regional design summit in Asheville.

Grant had simply been too impatient, too eager to flaunt his stolen wealth to his mistress, to wait for Friday.

His greed had saved my life.
