Chapter 6 - Christmas Morning Charade

Christmas morning arrived with a blinding white sun reflecting off eight inches of pristine snow.
Mark came down the stairs in his flannel pajama bottoms, looking relaxed, smelling of cedar shower gel instead of mistress. He poured himself a cup of coffee, humming a holiday tune under his breath. He believed he was completely in control. He believed he had a loyal, docile wife in the suburbs and a wealthy, pregnant lover ready to make him a multi-millionaire in the city.
"Presents first, or breakfast?" he asked cheerfully, leaning against the kitchen counter.
"Presents," I said, carrying a small, beautifully wrapped green box from under the tree. "I wanted to give you this one before we go anywhere."
He took the box, amused. "What did you get me, Ann? You said we weren't doing big gifts this year."
"It's not big," I said softly, sitting opposite him. "Just meaningful."
He tore away the foil paper and opened the velvet box. Inside was a vintage silver pocket watch—an heirloom that had belonged to his grandfather, which Mark had lost the winding key for three years ago. I had spent two months tracking down an antique horologist in Chicago to have it completely restored and polished.
Mark stared at the ticking hands. His expression shifted from casual delight to sudden, suffocating guilt. His throat bobbed as he swallowed.
"Anna..." he breathed. "You... you had it restored?"
"It took three months," I lied effortlessly, leaning forward and resting my chin in my hands. "A man should always know what time it is, Mark. Especially when he's building a future."
He stared at the ticking watch, his hands trembling slightly. For a split second, I saw the ghost of the boy I had loved in college—the boy before the greed, before the corporate ladders, before Jessica Vance poisoned his brain with promises of easy wealth.
Then his phone buzzed violently on the counter.
The spell broke. Mark snapped his head toward the screen. The display flashed with a notification: *Meeting reminder: Sterling Group follow-up.*
Jessica. Using a calendar alert code to signal him on Christmas morning.
Mark cleared his throat, snapping the watch case shut with an awkward snap. "Thank you, Anna. Really. It's... it's incredible." He pocketed his phone with unnatural haste. "Listen, speaking of the Sterling Group... I forgot to mention. Julian Vance is hosting an informal holiday brunch at the Northridge Country Club at eleven. Just key investors and their spouses. We need to go."
I feigned surprise. "Julian Vance? Mark, we aren't members at Northridge. How did we get invited to that?"
"One of the junior partners couldn't make it," Mark said, his voice rising with nervous excitement. "Vance personally asked for me to fill the seat. It’s huge for my division, Anna. If I land his firm’s account, our lives change completely."
May you like
*Oh, they’re changing, Mark,* I thought. *Just not the way you think.*
"Then I’ll wear the emerald dress," I said with a glowing smile. "The one you love."
