Chapter 4 - The Midnight Knock

The elevator chime didn't sound. Instead, precisely forty minutes later, heavy fists hammered against the reinforced oak double doors of the penthouse.

"Claire! Open the door!"

Evan’s voice echoed through the hallway. He was shouting, completely unconcerned about the neighboring tenants who paid tens of millions of dollars for absolute privacy.

"Claire! The doorman tried to stop me! What the hell is going on? Open this goddamn door!"

Claire walked out of the study. She wore silk pajamas and a cashmere robe, her hair tied back cleanly. She didn't hurry. She reached the foyer, stood behind the solid door, and pressed the intercom button.

"The police are six minutes away, Evan," she said evenly. "I’d suggest you take the service stairs down before they arrive."

There was a heavy thud against the wood—Evan leaning his forehead against the door.

"Claire... please," his voice broke, theatrical and desperate. "Don't do this. I lost my mind tonight. Sloane is crazy, okay? She’s obsessed with me. I didn't know she was going to hit you. If I had known, I would have put myself between you two. You know I love you."

"Do you?" Claire asked through the speaker. "Is that why you gave Aegis Brand Management four point two million dollars of Hawthorne’s operational budget?"

Total, absolute silence fell on the other side of the door.

Even through the heavy wood, Claire could feel the oxygen leave his lungs.

"How... how do you..." Evan stammered.

"I am the chair of Beaumont Capital, Evan," Claire said, her voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp whisper. "Did you truly believe that because I poured you coffee in the morning and picked out your bespoke ties, I couldn't read an income statement? Did you think I was stupid, or were you just so intoxicated by the sound of your own voice that you forgot whose money made you?"

"Claire, listen to me," Evan rushed out, his words tumbling over each other in sheer panic. "Aegis was a mistake. It was a tax structure! It wasn't what it looks like! Sloane was blackmailing me! She threatened to go to the press with made-up stories if I didn't pay her!"

"You can tell that to the federal prosecutors, Evan. Marcus sent the audit packet to the SEC and the Southern District ten minutes ago."

"Are you insane?!" Evan screamed, slamming his palms against the door again. "That will destroy Hawthorne! That will destroy *my* company!"

"Hawthorne isn't your company," Claire said coldly. "It never was. You own three percent of the common shares, Evan. Beaumont owns forty-two percent, and the family trusts control another twenty. You were an employee. A well-dressed, overpaid employee."

Down the hall, the quiet chime of the service elevator sounded. Heavy, synchronized footsteps approached.

"Mr. Whitmore?" a deep, uniform voice called out. "Step away from the door and place your hands behind your back."

"Get away from me!" Evan yelled. "I live here! This is my penthouse!"

"The building deed is held under Beaumont Residential Trust LLC," the officer's voice replied flatly. "Mr. Whitmore, you have been formally trespassed by the owner. Hands behind your back, sir. Do not make this difficult."

Claire listened through the intercom as the scuffle was brief, followed by the metallic click of handcuffs and Evan’s muffled curses fading down the hall.

She released the intercom button.

She turned back toward the study, but the quiet didn't bring relief. It brought the distinct, cold awareness that tomorrow morning, the war would move from the foyer to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
