Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Late that afternoon, after the official ceremony had concluded and the crowds had dispersed, I walked down to the docks along the Severn River.

The air was crisp and fresh, smelling of salt water and autumn leaves.

I heard footsteps approaching down the wooden pier. I turned to see my father and Marin walking toward me.

Marin was holding two paper cups of hot coffee. She handed one to me with a warm smile. "Congratulations, Captain Alden."

"Commander Alden," I corrected with a smile, taking the warm cup. "Let's not promote me too fast."

We laughed—a genuine, easy sound that had been missing from our lives for decades.

My father walked up to the edge of the pier, looking out over the glittering water where several Navy training patrol craft were heading out toward the Chesapeake Bay.

"I sold the Virginia Beach house last week, Maya," my father said quietly.

I looked at him. "Where are you moving?"

"I bought a small place three blocks from campus here in Annapolis," he said, turning to look at me with a soft, humble smile. "I figured... if you'll have us, Marin and I could host Sunday dinners for you and your midshipmen."

Marin nudged my shoulder playfully. "And I promise I won't tear any shirts this time."

I looked at my sister, then at my father. The painful memories of the past—the brutal fire, the humiliating gala, the years of cold silence—had not vanished completely. The scars were still there on my back, permanent and deep.

But they no longer hurt. They were just part of my story now. A story of resilience, truth, and a family that had finally burned away its toxic pride to find what truly mattered.

I wrapped my arm around Marin's shoulder and pulled her close, while my father put his arm around both of us.

"Sunday dinner sounds perfect, Dad," I said, looking out toward the open horizon. "Just make sure you let me check the menu first."

Together, we stood on the dock, watching the ships sail out toward the open sea under a brilliant, golden sky.
