Chapter 5 - THE CORNERED BEAST

Daniel caught up with me in the marble lobby of the building as I waited for the elevator.

He grabbed my arm, his fingers digging hard into my coat sleeve. “Are you out of your fucking mind, Claire?!” he hissed, his voice shaking with terrifying rage. “You destroyed my uncle’s reputation! You blew up my career!”

I turned my head slowly, looking down at his hand on my arm until he realized where we were—in a lobby filled with security cameras and corporate witnesses—and yanked his hand back as if he had been burned.

“You tried to use my job to force me into taking your mother’s abuse, Daniel,” I whispered, stepping closer to him so only he could hear. “You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet for three years. You forgot that I’m the one who audited your family’s businesses when we got engaged.”

Daniel stepped back, his eyes wide with a sudden, sickening panic. “What are you talking about?”

“I know about your mother’s gambling debts in East Hammond,” I said softly. “I know why she came to my apartment two nights ago. She didn't need a place to stay, Daniel. She needed three hundred thousand dollars to pay off her creditors before they foreclosed on her house in Naperville.”

Daniel’s jaw dropped. He stared at me as if I were a stranger who had stolen his wife’s face.

“She thought that if she bullied me, if she made me feel small and obedient, I’d open my private trust account and give her the money,” I continued. “And you were going to help her do it.”

“Claire... please...” Daniel’s voice cracked, the arrogant corporate executive vanishing completely, leaving behind a desperate, pathetic coward. “My mother is in deep trouble. They’re going to take her house. If you don't help us, we lose everything!”

“You already lost, Daniel,” I said as the elevator doors opened behind me.

I stepped inside the brass elevator, facing him as the doors began to close.

“My process server will meet you in the lobby at five o'clock with the divorce petition,” I told him. “Have a nice afternoon.”

The doors slid shut, cutting off his frantic screaming.
