Chapter 6 - First Breath, Cold Truth

"Heart rate sixty... seventy... we have a rhythm!"

A tiny, choked gasp cut through the mechanical chaos of the operating room.

It was faint at first—like the squeak of a bruised sparrow—and then it grew, filling the room with a sharp, angry, defiant wail.

"He's breathing," the neonatologist exhaled, tears stinging the corners of her safety goggles. "Apgar is four at one minute, up to seven at five minutes. We need to transfer him to the Level IV NICU immediately for therapeutic hypothermia."

On the surgical table, Dr. Katherine finished closing the deep tissue layers. Serena’s vital signs had stabilized at the ragged edge of survival.

"She made it," Katherine whispered, stripping off her bloody gloves. "God knows how, but she made it."

Four hours later, the morning sun broke over Chicago, casting pale gray light into the private intensive care room.

Serena’s eyes fluttered open. Her throat felt as if it had been scraped with broken glass from the endotracheal tube. Every fiber of her lower abdomen radiated blinding, throbbing agony.

She tried to lift her hand. It felt impossibly heavy, weighed down by IV ports and pulse oximeters.

"Rena?"

Elena was instantly by her side, her face swollen from crying, her dark circles bruised into her pale skin.

"The... baby..." Serena could barely form the syllables.

"He's alive," Elena choked out, grasping Serena’s fingers and pressing them to her wet cheek. "He’s in the incubator upstairs. He’s fighting, Rena. He weighs five pounds, four ounces. He has your dark hair."

Serena closed her eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dried salt on her cheek. "And... Lucian?"

Elena didn't answer.

Instead, a quiet knock sounded at the door. Marcus Chen entered, wearing an immaculate dark suit, carrying a slim leather folder. His eyes held none of the professional detachment he usually wore like armor; they were filled with profound sorrow and quiet fury.

"Serena," Marcus said softly, standing at the foot of the bed. "I have the finalized paperwork."

Serena looked from Marcus to Elena. She didn't need to ask if Lucian had arrived. The pristine, empty chairs around her hospital bed answered every question her heart had ever dared to ask.

"Give me the pen, Marcus," Serena whispered.

"Serena, you just came out of critical surgery," Marcus advised gently. "You can wait until tomorrow."

"No," she said. Her voice, though weak, possessed the cold, unyielding strength of tempered steel. "Give me the pen. Before he gets here. Before he poisons the air my son breathes."

Marcus opened the folder.

With trembling fingers, Serena signed the emergency custody petition, revoking Lucian’s parental rights pending full legal separation, and signed the divorce decree with a single, unbroken stroke.
