Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Guest

Three days later, I was back in my Riverside Drive penthouse.
The broken porcelain had been cleared away, the red wine stain had been professionally lifted from the Persian rug, and the quiet peace of the Hudson River view filled the spacious living room.
My ribs were healing slowly, but for the first time in three years, I felt light. I felt safe.
My phone rang on the kitchen counter. It was the building doorman, Hector.
"Miss Claire, good afternoon," Hector said politely. "I apologize for troubling you, but there is a young woman in the lobby insisting she needs to speak with you regarding Mr. Whitmore. She says her name is Vanessa."
I paused. Vanessa—Daniel’s "attractive executive assistant" whom he had tried to move into my home on the night of the attack.
"Send her up, Hector," I said calmly.
Two minutes later, the private elevator opened, and Vanessa stepped out into the foyer. She was in her mid-twenties, dressed in a sharp designer suit, but her face was pale and her hands were trembling as she held a leather folder against her chest.
She took one look at the magnificent penthouse, then looked at me, taking in my chest binder visible beneath my cardigan.
"Claire... Mrs. Whitmore," Vanessa stammered, stepping cautiously into the living room. "I... I don't know what to say. I read the news reports this morning."
"It's Claire Vance now," I said smoothly, pointing to a armchair across from me. "Sit down, Vanessa. Why are you here?"
Vanessa sat on the edge of the cushion, looking terrified. "I came because... because Daniel lied to me about everything. He told me you were an estranged, abusive wife who refused to give him a divorce. He told me this penthouse belonged to his family and that you were leeching off him!"
"And you believed him?" I asked quietly.
"He was my boss," Vanessa said, tears forming in her eyes. "He promised me a promotion if I helped him manage his personal affairs. But when I saw the news this morning—when I saw the video transcript of what he did to you—I realized what kind of monster he really is."
She set the leather folder on the coffee table and pushed it toward me.
"What is this?" I asked.
"It's Daniel's corporate file from the firm," Vanessa revealed, leaning in closer. "For the last year, Daniel hasn't just been abusing you. He's been embezzling money from his corporate clients into a private offshore account in the Cayman Islands. He was planning to drain your joint accounts, file for bankruptcy, and leave the country with his mother once his promotion went through."
I opened the folder. Page after page of wire transfers, forged signatures, and shell company documents were neatly organized inside.
"Why are you giving this to me, Vanessa?" I asked, looking up at her.

"Because yesterday, when he called me from jail asking me to post his bail using his offshore funds, he threatened to ruin my career if I didn't help him," Vanessa said, her voice filled with anger. "I'm not going to fall for his trap. He tried to destroy your life, and he tried to make me an accomplice to his crimes. He deserves everything that's coming to him."
I closed the folder and looked at the young woman. "You did the right thing coming here, Vanessa. Hand this folder over to Evelyn Reed down at the district attorney's office. By tomorrow morning, Daniel won't just be facing assault charges. He'll be facing federal fraud."
