Chapter 10 - THE CLEAR SKY

Three years after the wedding.
The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, casting a warm golden glow across the water.
I stood on the wooden deck of my new home in Evanston—a bright, cozy house filled with books, fresh flowers, and sunlight.
From the kitchen inside, I could hear the sound of soft jazz music playing, accompanied by the laughter of friends. Miguel and his new fiancée were setting the dinner table, while Detective Ortiz was trying to convince my old consulting partner to try her famous spicy chili.
I held a glass of white wine, leaning against the wooden railing, watching the gentle waves lap against the shore.
My phone chimed with a text notification.
It was an update from the Santos & Vance Foundation dashboard: Over 1,200 families supported this year.
I smiled, slipping the phone back into my pocket.
My life wasn't defined by the night a man tried to lock me in a burning room. It wasn't defined by the scars on my shoulder or the headlines that had dominated the news for months.
It was defined by what I chose to build after the storm.
I took a deep breath of the fresh, cool lake air. My lungs were completely clear. My mind was entirely at peace.
"Clara! Dinner's ready!" Miguel called out from the kitchen door, waving a tea towel. "Ortiz claims she didn't burn the garlic bread, but I have my doubts!"
"I heard that, Santos!" Ortiz shouted from inside, prompting a chorus of laughter from the kitchen.

I turned away from the lake, taking a step toward the warm light of the house.
I opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it softly behind me—leaving the shadows of the past outside in the dark, where they belonged forever.
