Chapter 11 - The Shadow Strikes Back

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, steel-blue morning.
Eli was sitting up in bed, happily eating a bowl of warm oatmeal topped with fresh strawberries, while Theo proudly demonstrated how he could stack wooden blocks to the ceiling. Preston sat on the edge of the bed, a soft, rare smile gracing his features as he helped Theo balance the top red block.
"Good job, Theo," Preston murmured, his heart swelling with an emotion so fierce and unfamiliar it terrified him. "Just like that."
Naomi watched them from the armchair, a warm mug of tea between her hands. For the first time in five years, the dark circles under her eyes seemed a little lighter, though the caution in her gaze hadn't completely vanished. Trust, once shattered, took time to rebuild. But the hostility had melted into a tentative, fragile peace.
Suddenly, the door to the private suite was pushed open without a knock.
Martin stepped inside, his face pale and grim, completely out of breath.
"Preston," Martin said, his voice taut with urgency. "We have a critical situation."
Preston stood up immediately, his protective instincts flaring. He stepped between Martin and the bed where the boys were playing. "What is it?"
"It’s Julianna Thorne and your mother," Martin said, lowering his voice, though the tension vibrated through the room. "When you pulled the Hayes capital out of the Thorne merger yesterday, their stock plummeted forty percent at the opening bell. The Thorne patriarch had a stroke. Julianna is completely out of her mind."
"Let them burn," Preston said coldly. "They brought this on themselves."
"You don't understand, Preston," Martin urged, pulling a tablet from his briefcase. "Julianna knew you were searching for Naomi. Before the markets opened this morning, Thorne Legal filed an emergency petition with the Family Court, backed by Eleanor’s sworn testimony."
Naomi stood up, her tea spilling onto the saucer. "What kind of petition?"
Martin looked at Naomi with deep sympathy, then turned his gaze back to Preston.
"Eleanor signed an affidavit stating that Naomi Vance is an unfit, mentally unstable mother who concealed high-profile heirs in squalid conditions for financial extortion," Martin stated grimly. "And because you are not legally registered on their birth certificates, Julianna’s uncle—Judge Harrison Thorne—just signed an emergency protective custody order."
Before Preston could even process the words, heavy footsteps echoed down the hospital corridor.
Three uniformed police officers rounded the corner, accompanied by two stern-faced Child Protective Services caseworkers and a smirking senior partner from Thorne & Co. Legal.
"Naomi Vance?" the lead CPS caseworker announced, stepping directly into the room with a set of legal binders. "Under Section 402 of the Emergency Welfare Act, we are here to execute an immediate removal order for the minor children, Theodore and Elijah Vance. Stand aside."
Naomi let out a bloodcurdling scream, diving toward her sons as Theo and Eli began to cry in terror.
May you like
Preston’s eyes turned pitch-black with murderous fury. He stepped forward, his body shielding Naomi and the bed, his voice dropping into a guttural, dangerous roar that made the armed officers halt in their tracks:
"If any of you takes one more step toward my children, not a single person in this room will walk out alive."
