Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The ballroom of five hundred Wall Street heavyweights went dead silent.

On the twenty-foot screens, Nathan’s face appeared in terrifying, razor-sharp clarity. The high-fidelity audio system blasted his voice across the room, echoing off the gilded molding:

*“Know your place.”*

Then came the strike. The sound of the slap reverberated like a gunshot. The screens then split into a four-way angle, showing the immediate aftermath: Nathan’s sneering face, the blood trickling down my chin, and his unmistakable threat: *“Delete the recordings. Now.”*

Gasps rippled through the audience. Dozens of financial reporters scrambled to lift their cameras, filming the massive projection while flashes went off like lightning strikes across the stage.

“Turn it off! Cut the power!” Nathan screamed at the technical crew, his composure shattering completely into frantic panic. “Shut it down!”

The screens didn't go dark. Instead, they transitioned to a second slide: bank statements from Boreas Holdings, showing three million dollars in unauthorized corporate transfers, followed by Claire Montgomery’s signed declaration detailing sexual extortion and non-disclosure hush money.

Henrik Lindqvist took three steps back from Nathan as if the man were carrying the plague.

“Arthur,” Lindqvist said, his voice cold as absolute zero. “The merger is terminated. Effective immediately. Helios will not be associated with this company for another second.”

“Henrik, please! Let’s discuss this in the green room!” Vance pleaded, grabbing Lindqvist’s sleeve. Lindqvist violently pulled his arm away and walked toward the exit, his entire entourage following behind him.

Nathan turned back to me, his face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated madness. “You ruined it,” he whispered, his chest heaving violently. “Four billion dollars! Four years of work! You destroyed my life!”

“You destroyed your own life the moment you believed you were above the law, Nathan,” I said, standing my ground.

Julian Croft grabbed Nathan’s arm, his voice frantic. “Nathan, we need to leave right now. We need to go out the back entrance before—”

The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.

Six agents wearing navy windbreakers with yellow lettering—**FBI**—marched down the center aisle, accompanied by Detective Miller and four NYPD officers.

The lead agent, Catherine Reyes, held a federal arrest warrant in her hand.

“Nathan Cross,” Agent Reyes announced, her voice cutting through the room with the force of iron. “You are under arrest for honest services wire fraud, embezzlement, and witness tampering. Put your hands behind your back.”

Nathan backed away toward the edge of the stage, his eyes wild, looking around the room for an escape that didn't exist. “Arthur! Do something! Julian, stop them!”

“There’s nothing to stop, Nathan,” Julian Croft whispered, stepping away from his client and raising his hands in surrender. “It’s over.”

Nathan looked at the sea of flashing cameras, at the hundreds of investors staring at him with undisguised disgust, and finally at me.

He lunged forward with a desperate roar, his hands outstretched toward my throat.

He didn't make it two feet. Detective Miller and two federal agents tackled him hard onto the polished wood of the stage. The microphone on Nathan’s lapel was still live, broadcasting the sickening grunt as his face slammed into the floor, followed by the metallic click of handcuffs snapping tightly around his wrists.
