Chapter 5 - The Ashes of an Empire

The drive home from my parents’ estate was the longest and quietest of my life.

The snow had started falling heavily outside, casting a thick, swirling white veil over the dark Connecticut highways. The headlights of my SUV cut through the storm, illuminating the empty road ahead. In the backseat, securely strapped into her booster seat, Renata had finally cried herself to exhaustion. Her soft, rhythmic breathing was the only sound filling the cabin, a gentle reminder of what truly mattered in this cold, chaotic world.

My corporate empire, my family name, my generational inheritance—it all lay in ruins back at that estate, reduced to ash by decades of deception, greed, and unforgivable crimes.

Over the next forty-eight hours, the news broke across national media outlets. The arrest of Carmen and Richard DeLuca sent shockwaves through the financial sector and high-society circles alike. Investigative teams, accompanied by forensic archeologists and K-9 units, swarmed the sprawling woodlands behind my parents’ estate.

True to the estate manager's confession, they uncovered the rusted, snow-covered chassis of Elena’s vintage Volkswagen Beetle buried deep beneath a thick layer of frozen soil and fallen pine needles. Inside the trunk, along with her personal effects, forensic investigators recovered physical remains that DNA profiling confirmed within days belonged to Elena Vance.

My mother and father were denied bail, remanded to maximum-security holding facilities pending a multi-count indictment that included corporate fraud, kidnapping, coercion, and obstruction of justice, with murder charges pending further forensic review of the excavation site.

My sister, Paola, hastily packed up her daughters and fled to Miami, terrified of the social fallout and the complete evaporation of the DeLuca trust funds, which had been frozen by federal prosecutors pending asset forfeiture hearings.

And me?

I sat at the massive oak dining table in my own quiet, peaceful home, holding a cup of cold coffee, staring at the financial statements and legal briefs scattered across the dark wood.

The DeLuca Corporation board of directors had held an emergency virtual meeting late last night. Recognizing the toxic fallout surrounding my parents, and knowing my unimpeachable reputation within the firm, they unanimously voted to strip my father of his chairman title and appointed me as the sole Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board with absolute executive control.

I had the power, the wealth, and the influence to crush my enemies, buy out competitors, and conquer any corporate market in the world.

Yet, none of it brought me any satisfaction.

The only thing that mattered was the soft, shuffling sound of small footsteps padding across the hardwood hallway outside my study.

The door creaked open a few inches. A small head with messy brown hair poked into the room.

"Daddy?" Renata whispered, her big eyes blinking sleepily in the dim light of the desk lamp. "Are you still working?"

I immediately closed the corporate folders, pushed my chair back from the desk, and opened my arms wide.

"No, sweetheart. I'm done working for the day."

Renata broke into a wide, radiant smile—a smile completely unburdened by secrets, malice, or social pretense. She ran across the room as fast as her little legs could carry her and launched herself directly into my lap, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck and burying her face against my chest.

I wrapped my arms around her, holding her so tightly I could feel the steady, reassuring thrum of her heartbeat against mine.

"Daddy," she murmured softly, her fingers tangling in the fabric of my sweater. "Are we going to stay here forever?"

May you like

I kissed the top of her head, closing my eyes as a profound sense of peace settled deep into my soul.

"Yes, baby," I whispered, resting my chin against her hair as the snow continued to fall softly outside the window. "Just you and me. Forever."
