Chapter 8 - The Arraignment

Armed with the cloud footage, Detective Miller and the county prosecutor didn’t waste another second.
The very next morning, two unmarked police cruisers pulled into Arthur Vance’s circular driveway. In full view of the suburban neighbors who had spent thirty years admiring him, Arthur was led out of his double front doors in handcuffs.
He didn't look like a dignified pillar of the community anymore. He was wearing an untucked polo shirt, his face purple with outrage as the local news cameras—tipped off by an anonymous source—flashed relentlessly in his face.
“This is an outrage!” Arthur shouted, struggling against the officers holding his arms. “Do you know who I am? I know the commissioner! You will all lose your badges for this!”
The video had already been leaked to the press.
Within three hours, the twenty-second clip had gone viral across the internet. It was shared millions of times on social media. The public outrage was swift, brutal, and unyielding. The benevolent facade Arthur had spent an entire lifetime manufacturing evaporated in a matter of seconds. The charities he chaired immediately issued statements severing all ties. The board of directors at his former law firm voted unanimously to strip his name from their building.
Two days later, we faced each other at the county courthouse for his formal arraignment and bail hearing.
Arthur sat at the defense table, flanked by three high-priced attorneys in tailored suits. Julian sat directly behind him in the gallery, looking pale and thoroughly defeated.
When David and I walked into the courtroom, holding hands, Arthur turned his head. His eyes locked onto mine. There was no remorse in them. No regret. Only a venomous, unadulterated hatred.
The judge, a no-nonsense woman named Judge Evelyn Hayes, took her seat at the bench. She reviewed the charges: *Felony Injury to a Child with Intent to Cause Serious Bodily Harm, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Witness Intimidation.*
Arthur’s lead defense attorney stood up smoothly. “Your Honor, my client is a decorated former public servant with deep community ties. He poses no flight risk. We request an unsecured bond and the dismissal of the tampering charge due to a lack of chain of custody on the alleged video.”
Judge Hayes looked over the top of her reading glasses, her expression ice-cold.
“Counselor, I have reviewed the video evidence submitted by the prosecution,” Judge Hayes said, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. “In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely seen an act of child cruelty executed with such cold-blooded calculation. Your client did not merely discipline a child; he weaponized a deadly object against an innocent toddler.”
She slammed her gavel down with an explosive crack.
“Bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars, cash only. A permanent emergency restraining order is hereby issued. The defendant is not to come within one thousand feet of Maya Vance-Reed, David Reed, or Lily Reed. If he so much as breathes in their direction, he will spend the remainder of his pre-trial detention in a county jail cell.”
Arthur’s mouth dropped open. Julian buried his face in his hands.
