Chapter 5 - The Unmasking

A collective breath was sucked out of the room.

Beatrice whipped around, staring at me as if the General had pointed at a ghost. "Harper? You... you must be mistaken, General. Harper is just a junior logistics officer. She works at Fort Bragg behind a desk. She has nothing to do with high-level command."

"A desk officer?"

The young man with the limp stepped forward from behind General Sterling. He wore a sharp black tuxedo, but beneath his cuffs, purple graft scars were visible around his wrists. He looked directly at Beatrice with sharp disgust.

"Is that what she told you, Mrs. Vance?" the young man asked.

Preston scoffed, desperate to regain control of the room. "And who the hell are you to question my mother in her own home?"

"Preston, shut your mouth," Arthur Sterling hissed sharply from the crowd. The defense executive stepped forward, his eyes wide. "That’s Captain Caleb Sterling. The General’s only son."

Preston froze.

Captain Caleb Sterling ignored the room. His eyes found mine. He took two deliberate, limping steps forward, clicked his heels together, and snapped a crisp, razor-sharp salute directly at me.

"Major Vance," Caleb said, his voice thick with unshakeable emotion. "Callsign Viking Six. It is an honor to stand in your presence again, ma'am."

I felt the tension that I had held inside my ribs for three years finally tighten into steel. I stepped forward out of the shadows, coming to attention, and returned the salute with perfect, textbook form.

"At ease, Captain Sterling," I replied quietly. "You're walking well."

"Thanks to you, Major," Caleb smiled faintly, though tears welled in the corners of his eyes. "Because of you, I'm walking at all."

"What is the meaning of this theater?!" Beatrice snapped, her face contorting with rage and confusion. She couldn't stand the spotlight shifting away from her golden son. "Viking Six? Major? Harper has spent ten years running away from her responsibilities to this family! She wastes her life in motor pools while Preston builds an empire!"

"Silence," General Sterling barked.

The command tore through the room with the force of an artillery shell. Even the security guards outside seemed to straighten. Beatrice took an instinctive step backward, her lips trembling in shock.

General Sterling stepped past Preston, ignoring him completely, and walked toward the center of the ballroom where the microphone stood prepared for Preston’s engagement toast.

The General tapped the microphone once. The thump reverberated through the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen," General Sterling announced, his voice carrying the immense weight of forty years of command. "You are standing in the presence of one of the most decorated combat operators in the history of the Joint Special Operations Command. And tonight, her silence ends."
