Chapter 7 - The Intruder at the Gate

The morning brought cold sunlight and a fresh layer of tension. The attack on the estate had sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld, and the alliances holding the city together were fracturing.

At two in the afternoon, the roaring engine of a red Ferrari announced an uninvited arrival.

Hannah was in the glass-walled sunroom helping Matteo with a watercolor painting when the heavy oak doors of the foyer burst open. High heels clicked with furious urgency against the marble.

"Lucas! I demand an explanation!"

It was Victoria Bellini. The woman in cream from the day of the interviews had returned, flanked by her older brother, Dante Bellini—the hot-headed heir to the Bellini syndicate, who controlled the city's private security and narcotics corridors.

Lucas emerged from his office, his face set in stony indifference. "You are trespassing, Victoria."

"Trespassing?" Dante Bellini sneered, adjusting the lapels of his leather trench coat. "My family controls thirty percent of your supply routes, Moretti. We hear your house took fire last night. We came to offer our condolences... and to ask why this peasant is still walking around your estate while my sister was dismissed like a dog."

Victoria pointed a manicured finger directly at Hannah, who was stepping out of the sunroom, instinctively shielding Matteo behind her legs.

"Look at her," Victoria spat, her eyes flashing with venom. "A low-class, penniless schoolteacher who couldn't even keep her job in the public system. You humiliated my family, Lucas! You chose a servant over an alliance with the Bellini bloodline!"

"She is not a servant," a tiny voice piped up.

Everyone stopped.

Matteo stepped out from behind Hannah’s skirt. His small jaw was set, his dark eyes—so eerily identical to his father’s—fixed on Victoria.

"She is my Hannah," the boy said clearly, each syllable ringing with total defiance. "Go away."

Dante let out a harsh bark of laughter. "The mute speaks! And he has his father’s insolence. Maybe the boy needs to learn who really holds the cards in this city—"

Dante took one aggressive step toward the boy.

He never finished the movement.

In a blur of lethal motion, Lucas crossed the room. His hand closed around Dante's throat like a hydraulic vice, slamming the younger mafia prince against the stone pillar with enough force to crack the masonry. Lucas drew a sleek black pistol from his waistband, jamming the barrel directly beneath Dante's jaw.

The Bellini bodyguards at the door reached for their weapons, but six red laser dots instantly painted their chests from the snipers stationed in the upper gallery.

"Touch my son, or speak to Miss Ward in that tone again," Lucas whispered into Dante's ear, his voice freezing the air in the room, "and I will feed your body to the river in five separate bags. Do you understand me, boy?"

Dante choked, his face turning purple, his eyes wide with genuine terror. He nodded as best he could against the stone.

Lucas released him, letting Dante crumple to the floor, gasping for breath.

"Get out," Lucas said, not even looking at Victoria, who was trembling in horror. "Tell your father that our alliance is under review. If another Bellini car approaches my gates without an invitation, it will be treated as an act of war."

Victoria scrambled to help her brother up, casting one final, venomous glare at Hannah before dragging Dante toward the exit.

Hannah stood frozen, her hand resting on Matteo’s shoulder. She had known Lucas was dangerous, but seeing the sheer, unbridled savagery of his protection was something else entirely. It was terrifying. And yet, deep in the darkest corners of her heart, she felt safer than she ever had in her life.
