Chapter 11 - The Knock at Dawn

The morning sun broke clear and bright over the snow on New Year's Day.

I woke up on the couch, where I had insisted on sleeping to give Maren space, with a smile on my face. The house was quiet. In the kitchen, I started a pot of coffee, humming softly as I waited for the dark brew to drip into the carafe.

Everything was finally falling into place.

My legal team had confirmed that Eleanor’s trust had been frozen pending an audit of the fraudulent transactions she authorized against Maren. Vance Technologies was steady under Marcus. I had a week of paternity leave lined up before I even had to think about corporate affairs.

Then came the knock.

It wasn't Eleanor’s sharp, demanding pound. It was three heavy, authoritative thuds that rattled the frosted glass of the front door.

I frowned, setting my coffee cup down. I walked to the door, unlocking the deadbolt and pulling it open.

Standing on the porch were two uniformed state troopers, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit carrying a black briefcase.

"Everett Vance?" the female trooper asked, her hand resting near her duty belt.

"Yes," I replied, an instant knot of dread tightening in my gut. "Can I help you?"

"I’m Investigator Miller from Child Protective Services," the woman in the gray suit stated, her voice chillingly bureaucratic. "We are here executing an emergency court order signed two hours ago by Judge Harrison."

"Court order for what?" My voice went cold.

"An emergency protective custody order for the infant, Leo Vance," Investigator Miller said, pulling a signed document from her folder and holding it out to me. "A formal petition was filed this morning alleging that the child was born under severe medical distress and that the mother, Maren Vance, has a documented history of severe postpartum psychiatric instability and child endangerment."

"What?!" I shouted, my blood running ice-cold. "That is an outright lie! Who filed this petition?!"

"The child’s paternal grandmother, Eleanor Vance," the investigator replied without an ounce of emotion. "Accompanied by certified medical affidavits from Dr. Alistair Finch stating the mother is unfit, alongside photographic evidence of neglect."

Behind me, I heard a sharp gasp.

Maren was standing in the hallway, holding Leo against her chest, her face drained of all color, trembling violently from head to toe.

"No..." Maren whispered, backing away slowly into the darkness of the hall. "No, please... not my baby. Everett, don't let them take my baby!"

"Mr. Vance, step aside," the state trooper commanded, stepping over the threshold with hand outstretched. "If you interfere with a court order, you will be placed under arrest immediately."

I stood between the officers and my family, my fists clenched, every protective instinct screaming in my veins as the nightmare we thought we had escaped closed its jaws around us once more.
