Chapter 7 - The Public Ambush

Two weeks passed. The initial shock of Trent’s arrest made front-page headlines across Chicago’s financial press. However, using the remnants of Brynn’s personal cash and borrowing heavily from predatory bail bondsmen, Trent managed to secure temporary bail pending trial.

Desperate, broke, and facing decades in federal prison, Trent knew his only lifeline was public pressure. He knew Laurel valued privacy above all else. If he could stage a tearful, public reconciliation or paint her as a ruthless billionaire who abandoned her child’s father, the court of public opinion might force her to settle.

He tracked Willa’s pediatric clinic through old medical insurance records.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, Laurel stepped out of the clinic’s private elevator into the main lobby after Willa’s two-week checkup. The pediatrician had confirmed Willa was flourishing, gaining weight, and perfectly healthy. Laurel smiled down at her sleeping baby, feeling a rare moment of peace.

Suddenly, flashbulbs exploded in her face.

"Laurel!" Trent’s voice echoed across the marble floor.

He emerged from behind the lobby pillars, dressed in a rumpled suit, looking hollowed-out and desperate. Behind him were two local tabloid photographers he had hired with his last remaining dollars.

"Laurel, please!" Trent dropped to his knees right in front of the exit doors, raising his hands in front of the flashing cameras. "Don't do this to our family! I made mistakes, yes, but Willa needs her father! You can't use your family's billions to wipe me out of her life!"

The clinic lobby immediately fell into an uncomfortable silence. Parents and staff stared in shock.

"Look at her, everyone!" Trent wailed, playing to the lenses. "Five days after she gave birth, she took my child, froze my life savings, and threw my elderly mother onto the street! All because of a petty marital disagreement! Is this justice? Just because she holds the Montgomery wealth, she thinks she can destroy an ordinary working man!"

Brynn suddenly appeared from the side entrance, holding a tissue to her eyes, looking like a devoted family friend. "Laurel, please have mercy on Trent! He hasn't slept in weeks! You're tearing a family apart!"

Laurel didn't flinch. She didn't hurry her steps, nor did she attempt to hide her face from the cameras. She adjusted Willa’s blanket with deliberate care, handed the baby gently to the bodyguard standing at her left, and turned to face Trent.

Her silence was louder than his screams.

"Trent," Laurel spoke, her voice resonant, clear, and perfectly modulated for every microphone in the room. "You embezzled seven point four million dollars from my family’s trust over a fourteen-month period."

Trent’s theatrical tears froze.

"Five days after I underwent an emergency caesarean section to save our daughter’s life," Laurel continued, stepping closer to him, "I walked into our master bedroom to find you in bed with Miss Walker."

Brynn gasped, lowering her tissue as whispers erupted among the spectators.

"And when I confronted you," Laurel’s voice dropped into an icy steel, "your mother told me to shut up because I had failed to give you a son. You laughed at me, Trent. You told me I was nothing without your permission."

She looked directly into the camera lenses.

"The evidence of your wire fraud, your embezzlement, and your hidden Cayman accounts has already been handed over to the Department of Justice. If you wish to argue your case, do it before a federal judge. Because the only thing you will ever receive from me again is a sentencing memo."

Trent opened his mouth to shout, but Laurel looked down at him with such profound, unadulterated pity that the words withered in his throat.

"Get up, Trent," she whispered softly. "You look pathetic."
