Chapter 10 - Courtroom Ambush

Three days later, the federal courthouse downtown was packed to capacity for Grant and Dylan Vance’s bail revocation hearing.

Grant sat at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit, his hands shackled to his waist. His hair was greasy, unwashed, and unstyled. The bruises on his face had turned a sickly yellow-green. Beside him, Dylan wore an identical jumpsuit, his jaw heavily wired and bandaged, staring blankly at the tabletop.

Their defense attorney, a high-priced criminal litigator named Marcus Vance—Grant’s distant cousin—stood before Judge Evelyn Ross.

"Your Honor," Marcus argued passionately. "This is nothing more than an aggressive divorce dispute blown out of proportion by an overzealous spouse! Mr. Grant Vance has deep ties to this community. The five million dollar bail is punitive and unconstitutional. We request he be released on personal recognizance under electronic monitoring."

Judge Ross looked over her spectacles, entirely unimpressed. "And the interstate fraud charges, counsel?"

"Mere clerical discrepancies that will be resolved during arbitration," Marcus claimed smoothly.

"If it please the court," the lead federal prosecutor, Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayes, stood up. "The government has newly discovered evidence that supersedes the initial indictment."

Grant’s head snapped toward the prosecutor’s table.

"We call Nora Vance to the stand," Hayes said.

Grant lunged forward against his chains, his eyes bulging. "She can't testify! Spousal privilege! Marcus, tell her she can't!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Ross banged her gavel with authority. "One more outburst and you will be held in contempt and removed from this courtroom!"

I walked up the carpeted steps to the witness stand, took the oath, and sat down. I wore a sharp black tailored suit. I didn't look at Grant once.

"Mrs. Vance," Prosecutor Hayes began. "Can you identify the document marked Government Exhibit 42?"

"I can," I said, my voice projecting clearly through the microphone. "It is a handwritten ledger recovered from the defendant’s home safe, detailing fourteen offshore shell accounts operated under the names of Grant Vance and Dylan Vance."

"And did you discover any communication regarding the late Elena Sterling?"

A collective gasp echoed from the press benches. Reporters frantically began scribbling in their notebooks.

At the defense table, Grant’s face drained completely of blood. He began hyperventilating, tugging violently at his waist chain. "No... no, that's private... that's illegal search and seizure!"

"Your Honor," Hayes continued calmly. "Based on the offshore financial logs provided by Mrs. Vance, the Justice Department in coordination with the Florida State Attorney's Office has officially reopened the homicide investigation into the death of Elena Sterling. Grant Vance and Dylan Vance are now the primary suspects in a premeditated murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."

Judge Ross’s face turned to stone. She looked down at Grant, who was now weeping openly, his forehead pressed against the polished wood of the defense table.

"Bail is denied," Judge Ross ruled, bringing the heavy wooden gavel down with a thunderous crack. "The defendants will be remanded to the Metropolitan Detention Center without bond pending trial."
