Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE DYNASTY FELL

The emergency board meeting began at nine the following morning.
Duca Holdings occupied the upper floors of a glass tower overlooking Boston Harbor. By the time Matteo arrived, reporters had gathered outside, and several board members were already demanding explanations.
Julian stood near the conference table, wearing a charcoal suit and the expression of a man who believed he had won.
“Thank you for coming,” he announced. “I know there are concerns about the company's stability.”
He displayed a series of financial charts.
“These records show unexplained transfers, unauthorized payments, and irregularities dating back years. Matteo Duca was chief executive during much of that period.”
Several board members exchanged uneasy glances.
Julian continued.
“I believe my cousin knew more than he admits.”
Matteo took his seat.
“You're correct about the irregularities.”
The room went silent.
Julian blinked.
Matteo placed a folder on the table.
“These records show that money was transferred through Northstar-linked companies. Some transactions were authorized by my father. Others were approved by Julian. Several were disguised as consulting fees.”
Julian's face tightened.
“You're making accusations without context.”
“No. I'm providing the context you omitted.”
Matteo opened the folder and displayed the relevant records. He explained that the documents had been supplied to independent investigators and that the company was cooperating with the authorities.
He did not claim that every allegation had been proven.
He did not conceal his father's involvement.
He did not pretend that Duca Holdings had been entirely innocent.
“I will not ask this board to protect my family from legitimate scrutiny,” he said. “If I have failed in my responsibilities, I will answer for it. But I will not allow anyone to use our company's name to conceal fraud or intimidate witnesses.”
Julian stood abruptly.
“You're destroying everything your father built!”
“No,” Matteo replied. “I'm refusing to keep rebuilding the same lie.”
The board chair called for order.
Before the meeting could continue, two investigators entered with legal counsel and presented documents authorizing the preservation of company records.
They did not arrest anyone in the boardroom.
Instead, they explained that the investigation was ongoing and that certain financial accounts and electronic records would be secured.
Julian was asked to remain available for questioning.
He refused.
“I have done nothing wrong.”
“Then you should have no difficulty cooperating,” Matteo said.
Julian glared at him.
“You think this makes you a hero?”
“No.”
“Then what does it make you?”
Matteo looked at the records spread across the table.
“Accountable.”
The meeting was suspended.
Outside, reporters shouted questions.
Matteo gave a short statement confirming that Duca Holdings would cooperate fully with the investigation and that an independent review of its finances had begun.
He refused to discuss the children or Grace.
Their safety mattered more than public curiosity.
That evening, the situation took a dangerous turn.
Evelyn Marlowe contacted Matteo and offered to surrender the remaining Northstar records in exchange for protection from prosecution.
Matteo told her that any cooperation had to go through the authorities.
She agreed to meet investigators at a secure location.
But Julian learned about the meeting.
At 8:42 p.m., Luca received a call from the security team at the townhouse.
Someone had attempted to enter the protected suite.
The guards stopped the intruder before he reached the children, but the man escaped through the rear garden.
Mia and Lily were moved to another secure location under professional supervision.
Grace and Elena went with them.
Matteo remained at the townhouse with Luca and the investigators.
On the desk lay a note left by the intruder.
The girl has something that belongs to us.
Matteo recognized the handwriting from the anonymous message.
Julian.
He called his cousin.
Julian answered after three rings.
“You need to stop,” Matteo said.
“Stop what?”
“Whatever you think you're going to accomplish by threatening children.”
A pause.
“I haven't threatened anyone.”
“Then explain why someone tried to enter the protected suite.”
“I can't explain something I didn't do.”
Matteo's voice became cold.
“You can still make a choice. Cooperate with the investigation. Give them the records. Tell them what happened.”
“And spend the rest of my life in prison?”
“If the evidence supports that, you'll face the consequences.”
Julian laughed bitterly.
“You've become just like the people you claim to hate.”
“No. I'm finally refusing to protect them.”
The call ended.
Within minutes, investigators located Julian's vehicle near the harbor. They did not approach him alone or attempt to force a confrontation. Instead, they coordinated with the appropriate authorities and tracked his movements through lawful procedures.
Julian eventually appeared at the townhouse gate.
He demanded to speak with Matteo.
Luca refused to let him inside.
Matteo came to the doorway but remained behind the security line.
Julian looked exhausted.
“You have no idea what you've started.”
“I know exactly what I've started.”
“Northstar has people everywhere.”
“Then the investigation will uncover them.”
“You think a few documents can destroy an organization that has survived for decades?”
“No. But evidence, witnesses, and the law can.”
Julian stared at him.
For a moment, Matteo saw the cousin he had grown up with: the boy who had shared his toys, the young man who had stood beside him at his father's funeral.
Then Julian's expression hardened again.
“You should have left the past buried.”
“You should have stopped hurting people to keep it buried.”
Julian turned and walked away.
The authorities followed at a distance, prepared to intervene if necessary.
That night, Matteo received confirmation that Evelyn had surrendered the remaining records. She had agreed to cooperate with investigators, though her own role would be examined as part of the case.
The files established a clearer picture of Northstar's operations, including financial manipulation, falsified documents, and efforts to silence witnesses.
The case would take months, perhaps years.
But the secrecy was breaking.
At midnight, Matteo visited the protected suite.
Mia was asleep beside Lily's crib, one hand resting on her sister's blanket.
Grace sat in a chair nearby.
“You should sleep,” Matteo told her.
“So should you.”
He smiled faintly.
“I'll consider it.”
Grace studied him.
“Are you going to lose your company?”
“Possibly.”
“Your father's company?”
Matteo looked at the sleeping children.
“If keeping it means protecting what happened, then maybe losing it isn't the worst outcome.”
Grace reached for his hand.
“Your father tried to make things right. He just didn't know how to finish.”
“Perhaps.”
“Don't let his failures become yours.”
Matteo nodded.
For the first time in days, he felt something other than anger or fear.
He felt a responsibility that had nothing to do with inheritance.
Outside, the harbor lights shimmered across the dark water.
The dynasty was wounded.
Northstar was exposed.
And the truth was finally moving into the light.
But the hardest part was still ahead.
May you like
Because bringing down a corrupt organization was one thing.
Learning how to live honestly after generations of lies was something else entirely.
