Chapter 4 - The Legal Weapon

By 2:00 PM, I was sitting in a high-rise office in downtown Milbrook across from Arthur Vance, one of the top criminal defense and estate litigation attorneys in Massachusetts.

Arthur was sixty-five, with silver hair, sharp blue eyes, and a reputation for dismantling corrupt estates with surgical precision.

He listened quietly as I explained the situation, laying out my grandmother's trust documents, my medical records from the ER, and the photos of the hidden camera installation.

“You mentioned video footage?” Arthur asked, leaning back in his leather chair.

“Yes,” I said.

I pulled out my laptop, turned it toward him, and pressed play on the compiled footage: Lydia hiding the EpiPen, stirring the cashew powder into the cream sauce, forcing the spoon into my mouth, and pulling the phone cord from the wall.

Arthur watched the screen in dead silence. As the video played, I saw his jaw tighten and his eyebrows rise.

When the clip ended, he slowly closed his hands together on his desk.

“Miss Miller,” Arthur said, his voice deep and deliberate. “In my thirty-eight years of practicing law, I have seen vicious family disputes over inheritances. But this... this is not a civil matter. This is attempted murder, aggravated assault, elder abuse, and grand larceny.”

“Can we stop her from taking Dad’s money?” I asked.

“We can do far more than that,” Arthur said. “First, we file an emergency ex parte petition in probate court to revoke your sister’s power of attorney and freeze all of your father’s accounts. Second, we petition for you to be appointed as your father’s sole legal guardian.”

“What about the police?”

“I have a close relationship with District Attorney Walsh,” Arthur replied, reaching for his desk phone. “I am going to send him this video file right now. By tomorrow morning, I expect an arrest warrant to be issued for Lydia Miller.”

He looked at me with a solemn expression.

“However, you need to prepare yourself, Cassie. Once this lever is pulled, your family will explode. Your mother will likely side with Lydia to protect herself.”

I looked out the window at the skyline.

“My mother stood by and watched me choke on the kitchen floor while eating her dinner,” I said coldly. “She made her choice twenty-seven years ago. I’m just finalizing it.”
