Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT DANIEL CAME HOME

The milk was still spreading across the kitchen floor when Daniel Cole realized his entire life had been built on a lie.

His mother stood barefoot beside the shattered glass, one hand pressed against her cheek. His wife, Jessica, stood several feet away, her expression caught somewhere between terror and disbelief.

For fourteen nights, Daniel had watched his mother suffer through the security cameras on his phone.

But nothing had prepared him for seeing her bruised face in person.

"Mom," he whispered.

Margaret Cole looked at him as though she were afraid he might disappear if she blinked.

"Daniel?"

He crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around her. She felt frighteningly light against him.

"I'm home," he murmured. "I'm here now."

Margaret began to cry.

Behind them, Jessica recovered enough to speak.

"Daniel, please. You have to understand what you're seeing. Your mother has become increasingly difficult to manage. She forgets things, refuses to follow instructions, and sometimes becomes aggressive."

Daniel didn't turn around.

"She was holding a glass of milk."

"She knows she isn't supposed to take things without asking!"

"From her own refrigerator?"

"Our refrigerator," Jessica snapped.

The words hung in the air.

Daniel slowly released his mother and looked at his wife.

For eight years, he had believed Jessica was the person who understood him best. She had stood beside him when his small technology company nearly collapsed. She had celebrated when his first major contract came through and comforted him when his father died.

When Margaret moved into their Bellevue home after a minor fall, Jessica had insisted it was the right thing to do.

"She's your mother," she had said. "Of course we'll take care of her."

Now Daniel wondered whether every kind word had been another carefully rehearsed lie.

He took off his jacket and placed it around Margaret's shoulders.

"Go upstairs, Mom. I'll be there in a minute."

Margaret hesitated.

"Will she be angry?"

The question struck him harder than any accusation could have.

"No one is going to hurt you again."

She glanced at Jessica before slowly leaving the kitchen.

Once his mother was gone, Daniel placed his phone on the counter.

"I want you to watch something."

Jessica's eyes moved toward the screen.

"Daniel, you're making a terrible mistake."

He pressed play.

The first recording showed Jessica locking the pantry.

The second showed her removing Margaret's medication from a kitchen drawer and placing it inside her own handbag.

The third showed Margaret sitting at the dining table while Jessica carried a plate of food past her and told her she had already eaten.

Jessica shook her head.

"Those clips are taken out of context."

Daniel played the fourth recording.

On the screen, Jessica grabbed Margaret's wrist and shoved her backward into a chair.

"Stop acting helpless!" Jessica shouted in the video. "Nobody is going to believe you over me."

Daniel paused the recording.

"Would you like to explain that context?"

Jessica's face hardened.

"You've been spying on your own wife?"

"I installed cameras because my mother called me crying."

"Your mother has always been manipulative!"

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time in eight years, he looked at Jessica and felt nothing resembling love.

Then he opened the recording from three nights earlier.

Grant Mercer appeared on the screen.

Daniel's oldest friend stood beside the kitchen counter, holding a thick folder.

"By Friday, Margaret Cole will not be legally capable of stopping us," Grant said.

Jessica leaned closer.

"And Daniel?"

Grant smiled.

"By the time he understands what's happened, he won't have anything left to protect."

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

His best friend had been helping his wife destroy his mother.

But the recording continued.

Grant opened the folder and spread several documents across the counter.

"The guardianship petition is ready. Once the physician signs the evaluation, we can have her declared incapable of managing her affairs. Then the power of attorney transfers everything we need."

Jessica frowned.

"What about the old trust?"

Grant tapped the papers.

"That's why we need her signature before Friday."

Margaret appeared at the edge of the recording, moving slowly toward the kitchen.

Grant noticed her.

His smile disappeared.

"Mrs. Cole, shouldn't you be in bed?"

Margaret shook her head.

"I heard my husband's name."

Grant exchanged a glance with Jessica.

Then he picked up a glass from the counter and smashed it against the sink.

Margaret flinched violently.

Daniel watched his mother retreat from the room.

The recording ended.

For several seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the refrigerator humming.

Then Jessica whispered, "Daniel, please."

He picked up his phone.

"Don't touch another thing in this house."

"Where are you going?"

"To find out how much of my life my best friend has stolen."

As Daniel headed toward the staircase, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent him a message.

If you want your mother alive, don't trust the documents Grant gives you. Check your father's original will.

A second message followed.

And whatever you do, don't let Margaret leave the house tomorrow. They're planning to make her disappear.

Daniel stared at the screen.

He had thought he was returning home to expose an abusive wife.

Now he understood that someone was preparing to take his mother away from him forever.

And whoever had sent those messages knew exactly what was coming.
