Chapter 5 - The Emergency Ward

“Claire! Claire, tell them!” Ryan screamed through the open doorway, his face pressed against the glass as the officer pinned him. “Tell them it was an accident! Claire, please! I love you!”

The sheer hypocrisy of his screams made my stomach turn.

Detective Miller stepped out into the corridor and read Ryan his Miranda rights in a loud, monotonous cadence that echoed off the hospital tiles. Patricia stood frozen beside my bed, her haughty composure finally cracking as she watched her golden boy forced to his knees in public view.

“You’ll pay for this, you ungrateful little tramp,” Patricia hissed under her breath, grabbing her designer bag from the chair.

“Step out, ma'am,” the second officer instructed, grabbing her elbow firmly.

“Do not touch me! I know the mayor!” she shrieked, but the officer ignored her completely, escorting her out into the hall where hospital staff and visitors were stopping to gawk and film with their smartphones.

Marcus closed the door, shutting out the chaos. He turned to me, his chest heaving, holding up a transparent evidence bag. Inside the bag lay a small brass key with intricate teeth.

“Dad’s bank key,” I gasped, recognizing the blue tag attached to it.

“Found it in your jewelry box,” Marcus said, exhaling a long breath. “Ryan hadn't touched your bedroom yet. He was too busy trying to scrub the kitchen floor. He had three bottles of bleach and a mop out when the officers breached the front door.”

“Did he touch the clock?”

“No,” Marcus said, a triumphant gleam in his dark eyes. “He didn't touch the clock, and he didn't find the basement server. The technician from the state crime lab is at the house right now with Detective Miller’s team. They’re extracting the hard drive under a chain-of-custody protocol.”

A sudden, violent wave of pain hit my lower abdomen.

It wasn't the dull burn of the soup. It was a sharp, tearing cramp that ripped through my core, making me cry out and double over.

The heart monitor attached to my belly began to chime rapidly, the rhythmic *thump-thump-thump* of the baby’s heartbeat suddenly dipping into an erratic, sluggish stutter.

The door swung open, and Dr. Ramos ran inside, accompanied by two labor nurses.

“Claire! What’s happening?” Dr. Ramos shouted, throwing back the blanket.

“Contraction... intense contraction...” I gasped, unable to find breath.

Dr. Ramos checked the monitor strip, her face instantly turning deadly serious. “Fetal distress. Heart rate dropped to 90. The thermal stress and the emotional spike have triggered placental abruption. We don't have time to stall this.”

She looked up at the charge nurse. “Call the OR. Emergency C-section. Right now! Move!”

The world accelerated into a blur of motion. The hospital bed was unlocked, wheels screeching against the floor as the team pushed me down the hallway. Marcus jogged alongside the gurney, his hand holding mine tight.

“I’ll be right outside, Claire! You hear me? I’m not leaving you!” he shouted.

As the gurney rushed past the waiting area, I caught a glimpse of Ryan being marched toward the elevator in handcuffs. He stopped, staring at me as I was wheeled past, surrounded by frantic doctors.

His eyes were filled with panic—not for me, not for his unborn child, but because he knew the trap was closing around his neck.

“Clear the corridor!” Dr. Ramos yelled.

The double doors of the operating room swung open with a bang. Bright surgical lights blinded me. Cold oxygen hissed through a mask pressed over my mouth and nose.

“Count backward from ten, Claire,” the anesthesiologist said softly, placing a gentle hand on my forehead. “Your baby is going to be fine. We’ve got you.”

“Ten...” I whispered.

The image of my father’s smiling face under the old red oak tree flashed in my mind.

*“Never let anyone pressure you out of your shelter, Claire.”*

“Nine...”

The darkness pulled me under.
