Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The Vance townhouse on East 74th Street was suffocatingly quiet at two o'clock in the morning.
Julian sat on the edge of Lily’s canopy bed, holding an ice pack wrapped in a soft linen towel against her cheek. Lily had cried until her small body ran out of tears, finally drifting into an exhausted sleep, her tiny fingers still tangled in the fabric of Julian’s dress shirt.
On the nightstand rested the gold ring.
Julian picked it up with his free hand. He rubbed his thumb over the scratched gold. Eleanor had worn this ring through chemotherapy. She had worn it on the day Lily was born. When she died, Julian had placed it in a velvet box inside his private study safe, intending to give it to Lily on her eighteenth birthday.
How had it ended up in Lily’s hands tonight?
The door to the bedroom clicked open. Marcus Cole stepped inside. Marcus was fifty-two, an ex-FBI field agent who had served as the Vance family’s head of private security and logistics for over a decade. He carried a tablet under his arm and looked like a man who hadn't slept in twenty-four hours.
Julian gently slid his hand out of Lily’s grasp, pulled the floral duvet up to her chin, and stepped out onto the dimly lit landing. He pulled the bedroom door shut until only a crack remained.
“Did you get the footage?” Julian asked, his voice raw.
“I got everything,” Marcus whispered, handing him the tablet. “The Plaza’s head of security gave me full access. But Julian… you need to sit down for this. It’s worse than what happened in the ballroom.”
Julian leaned against the mahogany banister, tapping the screen. “Tell me.”
“Look at the timestamps from eight-thirty p.m.,” Marcus said, leaning in. “Forty minutes before the incident.”
The high-definition camera from the private hallway showed Victoria walking toward the private parlor where Julian and the gala committee members had been reviewing the charity auction items. Victoria was carrying her designer clutch. She stopped outside the door, glanced left and right, and pulled something small from her purse.
“She had Eleanor’s ring with her before she even left this house,” Julian breathed, his blood running cold.
“She took it out of your study safe yesterday afternoon,” Marcus said grimly. “I pulled the digital logs from your home office safe. The biometric scanner was accessed at two-fifteen yesterday while you were in meetings Midtown. She used your bypass emergency pin—the one you kept written in the leather ledger inside your desk.”
Julian closed his eyes, a wave of sickening guilt crashing over him. He remembered Victoria bringing him coffee yesterday morning, kissing his temple, leaning over his shoulder while he reviewed financial documents. She had seen him enter the code.
“Why?” Julian’s voice shook. “Why would she take Eleanor’s ring? Victoria has millions in jewelry. What was the point of taking a plain wedding band?”
Marcus swiped to the next video file. It showed the alcove near the children’s waiting lounge at the Plaza.
The video had audio.
Victoria was crouched down in front of Lily. Her face looked sweet, almost maternal. But the words coming through the tablet speakers made Julian’s stomach violently heave.
*“Look what I found in Daddy’s desk, Lily,”* Victoria’s voice purred on the recording. *“Your mommy’s ring. Daddy was going to sell it because looking at it makes him too sad. He told me he doesn't want anything that reminds him of her anymore.”*
On the screen, Lily’s little face crumpled in horror. *“No! Daddy wouldn't!”*
*“He did,”* Victoria smiled, slipping the gold band into Lily’s tiny pocket. *“Keep it in your hand, sweetie. Don't let Daddy see it, or he’ll throw it in the trash. Hold on to it as tight as you can.”*
Julian dropped the tablet onto the carpeted hallway floor. His chest heaved. He had to grab the banister to keep from collapsing.
“She orchestrated the entire thing,” Julian whispered. “She put Eleanor’s ring in Lily’s hand, told her I was going to throw it away, and then went into the ballroom and accused her of stealing *her* diamond ring.”
“She knew Lily would clutch that ring with her life,” Marcus said softly. “She knew if she tried to pull something from Lily’s hand in public, Lily would scream that it was her mother’s. To every onlooker in the room, it would look like a traumatized, kleptomaniac child desperately trying to keep a stolen piece of jewelry by claiming it was an heirloom.”
“And then Victoria was going to show everyone that the ‘stolen’ ring was actually hers,” Julian continued, putting the horrific puzzle together. “Except she was so arrogant, she got careless. She took off her real diamond ring in the restroom to make it look like Lily had swiped it from her purse, and she forgot it on the counter.”
“She didn't forget it, Julian,” Marcus corrected, his voice dropping lower. “She planted her own diamond ring in the restroom trash can. She intended to ‘discover’ it missing, accuse Lily, take Eleanor’s ring from Lily’s hand, and claim Lily was hiding the diamond somewhere in the venue. But the restroom attendant found the diamond on the counter before Victoria could complete the handoff.”
Julian stared at his friend. The depth of the malice was breathtaking. It wasn't just cruel; it was clinical. It was a calculated assassination of a seven-year-old child's sanity and credibility.
“Why would she go this far, Marcus?” Julian asked, his voice trembling with a father’s rage. “She’s the daughter of a banking dynasty. She has social standing. We were dating for six months. Why systematically destroy a child?”
Marcus reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a thick manila folder.
“Because Victoria Sterling isn't an heiress anymore, Julian. The Sterling family bank went into insolvency three months ago in Zurich. She is drowning in eighty million dollars of personal debt. And three weeks ago, she found out about Eleanor’s trust.”
Julian’s eyes snapped to Marcus. “Eleanor’s trust?”

“The irrevocable testamentary trust Eleanor set up for Lily before she died,” Marcus nodded. “One hundred and twenty million dollars in clean assets, untouchable by anyone—except Lily's legal guardian upon your marriage or incapacitation. Victoria wasn't trying to become your wife, Julian. She was trying to have Lily declared mentally incompetent and committed to a private psychiatric facility in Switzerland so she could take full legal control of that money.”
