Chapter 8 - The Clean Sweep

The following month passed in a whirlwind of legal filings, asset seizures, and quiet, restorative healing.
My leg was gradually mending. The heavy fiberglass cast had been removed, replaced with a sleek, removable orthopedic boot that allowed me to bear partial weight with the aid of a single cane. Every morning, I spent an hour doing physical therapy, feeling the strength slowly return to my calf and ankle. The physical pain was a constant reminder of how close I had come to being completely crushed—and how thoroughly I had risen from the asphalt.
Evelyn Vance’s world had completely evaporated.
To avoid serving prison time for her role in the Aegis scandal, she entered into a comprehensive plea agreement with the Department of Justice. She was forced to surrender her suburban home, her luxury vehicle, and every piece of jewelry Julian had purchased for her over the preceding two years.
Reduced to living on a basic monthly social security check, she was forced to move into a tiny, dilapidated one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Gary, Indiana. The relatives from Ohio who had feasted on my cooking and demanded my subservience vanished overnight, unwilling to associate with a convicted felon’s disgraced mother.
Julian remained in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, unable to post the five-hundred-thousand-dollar cash bail the judge had imposed after deeming him a flight risk. His trial date was set for spring, with legal experts estimating an eight-year sentence at a federal correctional institution.
On a bright Tuesday morning in mid-November, I sat in the executive conference room at the headquarters of Deloitte downtown.
At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance, looking at me over his gold-rimmed reading glasses with an expression of immense professional pride.
"The Apex Logistics board voted unanimously yesterday," Arthur said, sliding a thick legal folder toward me. "They have officially finalized the clawback of Julian’s assets. More importantly, their internal audit department is undergoing a complete structural overhaul."
"I saw the press release," I replied, setting my cane against the edge of the table. "They’re replacing the entire Midwestern procurement oversight committee."
"They are," Arthur nodded. "And the Board of Directors asked me personally to make you an offer. They want an external, independent compliance firm to oversee their global supply chain controls for the next three years. A retainer contract worth one point two million annually."
He smiled, leaning back in his leather chair.
"I told them you were no longer an employee of Deloitte. I told them you were the principal owner of Vance Forensic Consulting. Clara... the contract is yours if you want it."
I looked out the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing at the Chicago River winding its way through the canyon of skyscrapers beneath a brilliant blue sky.
Three years ago, I had abandoned my passion, my career, and my independence because a narcissist convinced me that my worth was defined by how well I managed his domestic comfort. I had allowed myself to be diminished, silenced, and ordered around like a servant—until the day a speeding car shattered my bones and woke me up from the nightmare.
"I'll take it, Arthur," I said, my voice steady, ringing with absolute authority. "On one condition."
Arthur raised an eyebrow, amused. "Name it."
"I choose my entire investigative team. And every single vendor Apex uses will be subjected to unannounced forensic sweeps twice a year."

"Consider it done," Arthur said, reaching across the table to shake my hand. "Welcome back to the arena, Clara."
