Chapter 6 - An Unlikely Alliance

My mug shattered against the marble floor. Scalding tea splashed across my bare feet, but I didn't feel it. Panic seized my throat like a physical hand.

"They're here," I gasped, backing away from the island toward the hallway leading to Lily's bedroom. "Noah, he's here. He used the police."

"Emily, stop," Noah commanded, his voice slicing through my hysteria with absolute authority. He stepped around the counter, stepping squarely between me and the entrance. "Marcus, are the deputies legitimate?"

"The uniforms and badges are authentic Cook County," Marcus replied through the intercom. "The warrant, however, is a forged emergency writ signed by a retired county magistrate who has been out of jurisdiction for eight months. They have a civilian accompanying them."

"Tommy," I whispered, the room spinning around me.

"Don't let them past the vestibule, Marcus," Noah said smoothly into the wall panel. "Engage the lobby lockdown protocol. Notify our private legal counsel. And call Deputy Police Chief O'Malley directly on his private cell."

"Lockdown engaged, sir. Local precinct backup is five minutes out."

Noah turned to me. His hands found my shoulders, his grip firm, grounding me against the pull of sheer terror. "Listen to me, Emily. Ryan Vance played his final card. He thinks he can use corrupt jurisdictional loopholes to tear Lily out of this tower before dawn. He expects you to be cowering in a cheap motel, terrified of a badge."

"I am terrified!" I sobbed, tears spilling down my cheeks. "He has the law on his side, Noah! In the real world, men like Ryan win because they know how to twist the system!"

"In his world, maybe," Noah replied, his voice dropping an octave, rich with power and utter defiance. "In my world, I own the system. But we need to make a choice, right now."

"What choice?"

"If you remain Emily Vance, an unemployed runaway mother from Texas, this custody battle will drag through the courts for eighteen months while Ryan's backers bleed you dry," Noah said, his eyes drilling into mine with unyielding resolve. "Or you can become untouchable."

I looked at him, completely confused. "How?"

"A public alliance. Whitman Group is hosting the annual Children’s Memorial Hospital Charity Gala at the Drake Hotel tomorrow night. Every major media outlet, politician, and federal judge in Illinois will be in attendance. We walk in together."

"As what?"

"As my fiancée," Noah said without a flicker of hesitation. "As the future Mrs. Whitman. The moment the press prints your photo on my arm, any attempt by Ryan Vance to accuse you of child endangerment or destitution becomes an international joke. My legal team becomes your legal team. My security detail becomes Lily's personal shield."

The room seemed to tilt. "A fake engagement? Noah, that's insane! You're an eleven-billion-dollar CEO! You don't just announce an engagement to a stranger from seat 14B!"

"I needed a distraction from the board of directors who are trying to replace me over the battery leak," Noah said, his lips curling into a grim, ruthless half-smile. "And you need an empire behind you to crush your ex-husband. We help each other. Thirty seconds on an airplane bought you two hours of sleep, Emily. Let me buy you the rest of your life."

Downstairs, the muffled sound of a physical struggle echoed through the intercom, followed by the distant wail of legitimate Chicago Police Department sirens converging on the tower.

I looked down the dark hallway toward the room where my daughter slept in safety for the first time in four years.

"What do I have to do?" I whispered.

Noah smiled, cold and triumphant. "Just hold my arm. And don't look back."
