Chapter 5 - The Ghost on the Wire

"Clara?"

The name ripped from Adrien’s throat in a choked, desperate gasp.

On the couch, Leo’s head shot up. "Mommy?!" the boy yelled, scrambling toward the phone, but Adrien held up a gentle hand, pressing the device harder against his ear as if he could physically pull her through the signal.

"Adrien... listen to me," Clara’s voice was faint, punctuated by sharp intakes of breath that sounded like cracked ribs. "I don't have... much time. The battery is dying... and they’re hunting me."

"Clara, where are you? What happened to you six years ago?!" Adrien demanded, his tears finally breaking free, hot and furious. "They told me you were dead! I looked for your body for months!"

"They forced me... Adrien," she coughed, a wet, rattling sound. "Montgomery... Richard Montgomery. When I was working at the bio-tech lab... I discovered his shell corporation was synthesizing experimental neurotoxins... using unhoused people in illegal trials. When I went to the authorities... Richard intercepted me. He told me... if I didn't disappear, he would kill you."

Adrien felt the room tilt. "He threatened me?"

"He had snipers outside your office six years ago, Adrien!" Clara wept, the terror in her voice as raw as if it had happened yesterday. "He showed me photos of you through a crosshair! He said if I died, you’d be safe. If I ever contacted you... he’d bury you. Then... two weeks after I ran to upstate New York... I found out I was pregnant with Leo."

Adrien closed his eyes, his forehead resting against the edge of the coffee table, his heart splintering into a million jagged pieces. For six years, while he was attending charity galas, designing skyscrapers, and drinking champagne with Richard Montgomery, Clara had been living in hiding, raising his son in terror, all to keep a bullet out of his head.

"Why now, Clara?" Adrien choked out. "Why did they come for you now?"

"Because... because of Isabelle," Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a panicked hum. "Two months ago, Isabelle saw me. I was working at an organic market in Hudson... thirty miles from their country estate. She recognized me. She didn't say anything, but two weeks later, Briggs started staking out my house. She told her father, Adrien! She knew! She couldn't let you find out before the wedding!"

Adrien’s vision turned scarlet. Isabelle hadn't just panicked at the wedding. She had orchestrated the hit. She had known Clara was alive. She had known about the children. And she had sent Briggs to erase them so she could secure her fairy-tale marriage and the Montgomery-Vance merger.

"Clara, tell me where you are," Adrien said, his voice deadly steady, all panic burning away into pure tactical resolve. "Right now."

"I managed to roll out of the van... when Briggs was driving me through the state park," she whispered, her voice fading fast. "I hid in the culvert until they drove off. I walked... I don't know how many miles. I’m at an old, abandoned fishing dock... off Route 9. Near the old iron bridge over the Hudson. Adrien... my leg is broken. I’m bleeding. I can hear cars on the access road... they’re searching with flashlights..."

"Hold on, Clara. Do not hang up."

Adrien pulled out his personal phone, powering it back on. He ignored the flood of notifications and dialed a direct line he had sworn he would never use again.

Marcus Vance. His older brother, a former Navy SEAL and currently the head of a private tactical security firm in Jersey City.

Marcus picked up on the second ring. "Little brother. Your wedding is trending on Twitter and it looks like a dumpster fire. What the hell happened?"

"Marcus," Adrien said, his voice chillingly calm. "Richard Montgomery took Clara six years ago. She’s alive. She’s bleeding out at the old Route 9 fishing dock by the iron bridge. Briggs is hunting her with a kill team. I need you, your men, and medevac gear. Now."

There was a half-second pause on the other end. All humor vanished from Marcus’s voice.

"Wheels up in four minutes. I’ll bring the heavy cavalry. Don't go in alone, Adrien."

"I'm not waiting," Adrien replied.

He looked down at the burner phone. "Clara? Can you hear me?"

Static hissed over the line.

Then, a distant shout echoed through the speaker: *"Over here! Check the tree line!"*

"Adrien..." Clara cried out, her voice a terrified whimper. "They found me—"

A loud crack—like the sound of a dry branch snapping under a heavy boot—echoed through the receiver, followed by the sound of the phone skidding across wet gravel.

Then, the line went dead.
