Chapter 7 - The Extraction

The intersection of 4th and Bainbridge was pure chaos.

Slush flew into the air as the yellow school bus sat tilted against the curb, its hazard lights blinking uselessly. A black utility van blocked the road at an angle, three masked men in tactical vests shouting commands into the sleet.

Mara stood on the sidewalk, shielding all three girls behind her body.

She had pushed them into the narrow alcove between a brick dry cleaner’s and a bakery. Her coat was torn, her hands bleeding from where she had scraped them against the rough brick shoving Chloe out of the line of fire.

“Get in the van, lady!” one of the masked men yelled, leveling a pistol at her chest. “Bellini just wants to have a friendly conversation with Valente’s little family! Move, or I start shooting kneecaps!”

“Mommy!” Daisy sobbed, clutching Mara’s jeans with both hands, burying her face into her mother’s thigh.

Aria, trembling violently, held Chloe’s hand with a grip so tight their knuckles were white. “Leave our mom alone!” Aria screamed, her small voice shrill against the wind.

“Shut up, kid!” the man barked, stepping forward, his gloved hand reaching out to grab Mara’s collar.

A roar of an engine ripped through the street.

A six-thousand-pound black armored SUV blew through the intersection at sixty miles per hour. It didn't brake. It smashed violently into the side of the kidnappers' utility van with an ear-shattering crunch of tearing metal, spinning the van 180 degrees into a steel light pole.

The shockwave knocked the masked gunman off his feet onto the icy asphalt.

Before the smoke could clear, the SUV’s passenger door was kicked open.

Nico Valente stepped into the street.

He moved with terrifying, lethal economy. Two shots barked from his weapon—precise, suppressed thuds. The second gunman, trying to raise an assault rifle from behind the crushed van, dropped instantly into the snow, clutching his shattered shoulder.

The gunman near Mara scrambled to his knees, raising his pistol toward the girls—

Nico closed the distance in four blinding strides. He didn't shoot. He kicked the man’s wrist, sending the gun clattering thirty feet across the ice, then seized the man by his tactical vest and drove his fist into the man’s jaw with bone-splintering force.

The gunman collapsed, unconscious before his head hit the curb.

Sirens wailed in the far distance, approaching fast.

Nico turned toward the alcove. The gun was already holstered, vanished beneath his coat.

Mara was shaking so violently she could barely stand, her arms locked around her weeping daughters. When she saw Nico standing there, his face spattered with sleet and cold sweat, a ragged, broken sob tore from her chest.

“Nico…”

Nico dropped to his knees in the dirty slush before them. His hands, usually so steady, trembled as he reached out, pulling Mara and all three girls into his massive chest.

“I have you,” Nico choked out, burying his face in Mara’s hair, his broad arms wrapping around all four of them, creating an impenetrable wall of steel and warmth. “I have you. You’re safe. Nobody is going to touch you.”

Daisy’s tiny arms wrapped around his neck, her tears soaking into his collar. “Mister Nico… you came.”

“I promised,” Nico whispered against her cheek, his voice cracking with an emotion he had buried for forty years. “I told you I don’t lie.”

Rafe pulled the SUV around, tires spinning in the slush. “Boss! Police cruisers are three blocks out! We have to move now!”

Nico stood, scooping Daisy up in one arm and pulling Mara against his side with the other. “Aria, Chloe, hold your mother’s coat! Into the truck!”

They scrambled into the reinforced rear cabin of the SUV. The heavy doors slammed shut with a vault-like *thud*, sealing out the cold, the violence, and the screaming sirens.

As Rafe accelerated away, blowing through red lights toward the expressway, Mara collapsed against the leather seat, clutching Chloe and Aria to her chest, her body shuddering with delayed shock.

Daisy remained glued to Nico’s lap, her small fingers clutching the lapel of his overcoat like a lifeline. Nico’s arm held her tight against his ribs, his other hand reaching across the seat to take Mara’s trembling, bloodied hand.

Their fingers laced together. Mara looked up at him through her tears, her hazel eyes searching his face. There was no anger left in her, no recrimination. Only the terrifying realization of how close she had come to losing everything—and the undeniable truth of who had saved them.

“Where are you taking us?” Mara whispered.

Nico squeezed her hand, his dark eyes burning with fierce, absolute devotion.

May you like

“To my home,” Nico said. “To the only place in this world where I can guarantee you will wake up tomorrow.”
