Chapter 11 - The Knock in the Dark

That evening, the penthouse felt different.
The weight of Tyler, Beatrice, and years of poverty had finally been lifted from my shoulders. Lily was asleep in her room, officially safe, officially protected, and carrying a name that meant no one would ever push her into the shadows again.
I stood on the balcony, watching the city lights glitter below. The cool breeze felt refreshing.
Footsteps approached behind me. Giovanni stepped out, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to me, his fingers brushing against mine, lingering a moment longer than necessary.
"To new beginnings," he said softly, raising his glass.
"To new beginnings," I replied, clinking my glass against his.
I took a sip, then turned to face him fully. "Giovanni... what you did in that boardroom today. Adopting Lily. Giving her your name. You didn't have to do that to save your company."
"I didn't do it for the company," Giovanni said, stepping closer. The usual cold, guarded barrier in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by raw, unmasked tenderness. "I did it because Lily is a remarkable little girl. And because her mother is the only woman who ever looked past my power, past my wealth, and saw a human being."
My heart hammered furiously against my ribs. "Giovanni..."
"I know this began as a contract, Jessica," he murmured, his hand gently cupping my cheek. His thumb traced my lower lip. "One year. Five million dollars. But if you asked me to tear up that contract tonight and make this real... I would do it in a heartbeat."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. For five years, I had survived alone, fighting every single day. For the first time in my life, I felt completely safe. Completely cherished.
I leaned into his touch, closing my eyes. "Tear it up," I whispered.
Giovanni’s eyes darkened with fierce emotion. He leaned down, his lips parting, closing the final inch between us—
*BAM! BAM! BAM!*
A violent, frantic pounding rattled the heavy reinforced doors of the penthouse foyer.
Giovanni pulled back instantly, his senses snapping back into razor-sharp alert. His hand moved reflexively inside his jacket, finding the concealed holster beneath his arm.
"Stay behind me," he ordered quietly.
Martha rushed into the hallway, looking terrified. "Mr. Fierro! The building security monitors... someone cut the private elevator feed!"
Before Giovanni could reach the foyer, the heavy double doors clicked and slowly swung inward.
Standing in the shadows of the doorway was not an assassin, nor the police, nor Aunt Beatrice.
It was an elderly woman leaning on a silver cane, her weathered face bearing the exact same amber eyes as Giovanni. Standing right beside her was a tall, scarred man whose face had been plastered across international missing-persons bulletins for fifteen years.
Giovanni froze, his entire body turning rigid as stone.

The elderly woman smiled a cold, terrifying smile, her gaze shifting from Giovanni to me, and finally toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping.
"Hello, grandson," the woman rasped. "Did you really think your mother was the only Fierro who survived that night? It’s time we discuss who truly owns that little girl you just adopted."
